Old Bangers, New Beats: Five Classics Reborn in EDM
Denver based DJ and producer GorillaT is back with “Pay Respect” his third release of 2025. A collaborative effort featuring industry heavy weight Shaquille O’Neal (DIESEL) on vocals and new Monstercat recruit FRAXURE. GorillaT and Shaq have worked together before, with GorillaT and Celo providing b2b support for Shaq’s Bass All Stars Phoenix last year. A festival curated by the legend himself. This prior history shows on the track’s smooth layering and steady rhythm. FRAXURE makes an amazing first impression, throwing his talents in the ring with two industry stars.
“Pay Respect” starts out with primate chattering effects and ectoplasmic synth bars. Shaq’s confident flow comes in at full force, demanding your respect and attention. The beat takes on a heavy bounce to match this intensity. Balanced out by chattering and icy production. Shaq absolutely GOES OFF here. With lines such as:
“From the scoreboard to the billboard.”
“Wring your neck like it was peppercorn.”
and “This ain’t a jet, it’s a Decepticon!”
Even having the guts to name drop people from his former profession. WILD!!
The initial beat is choppy and takes on a hip hop bounce. Surges of bass crash in and out while Shaq’s flow draws circles around his naysayers. Shaq’s rap verses build to a drop. This drop features GorillaT’s signature wubs, wonks, and YUHHHH’s. As well as the slashing bass from earlier. The next drop adds in thick grunt effects and extra sharp edges. The primate like chattering returns, giving us a brief break from the heaviness.
Shaq returns for one last verse. With braggadocios lines like “Remind y’all Why I’m him and why y’all, y’all.”
The beat on “Pay Respect” gathers stardust and travels throw the galaxy like a comet. Touching down on a wonk-heavy planet surrounded by a force field. Breaking this force field to do a primate shuffle on top of crisp drums. Closing out the track on an unexpected note.
This song is absolutely BONKERS and features Shaq and GorillaT and the top of their game. Shaq’s flow and lyrical abilities have further improved. While GorillaT continues to push the boundaries of his formula and capabilities. FRAXURE is a great addition to the Monstercat lineup and could not have picked a better duo to work with. I cannot wait to see what other artists he works with in the future.
“Pay Respect” is a heavy bop that exudes confidence and swagger. From the beat, to the lyrics and delivery. Extensive effort was put this incredible release and it shows. There is a lot going on, yet everything flows well together. Listen to this legendary bop to hear the heat for yourself.
