When The Marías wrap up their highly anticipated Tucson show at the AVA Amphitheater on Thursday, July 17, the night doesn’t end there. Josh Conway is taking over Gentle Ben’s in downtown Tucson for the band’s official Submarine Tour after-party.
A drummer, producer, and co-founder of The Marías, Conway has been key to crafting the band’s dreamy, genre-blending sound since day one. He met lead vocalist María Zardoya while working a sound gig at the Kibitz Room in LA, and the two clicked immediately—both creatively and personally. What started as an impromptu collaboration quickly grew into a full band with the addition of Edward James on keys and Jesse Perlman on guitar.
Although Conway and Zardoya are no longer a couple, the two have continued working together and have even said that their creative process has become stronger since the split. Conway’s musical style pulls from psychedelic rock, classic pop, and modern R&B, giving the band a sound that’s lush without being overproduced. Their unique balance helped shape The Marías’ debut album Cinema, which earned a GRAMMY nomination for Best Engineered Album.
Now, Conway is stepping out from behind the drum kit to host a more intimate kind of party. His exclusive DJ sets at the official freakmarine after-parties offer fans a fresh take on The Marías’ sonic universe, weaving in dreamy textures, house grooves, and unexpected edits that feel both nostalgic and new.
If you’re catching The Marías live at AVA, don’t miss the chance to keep the energy going at Gentle Ben’s, located just a short drive away near the University of Arizona. Conway’s sets have already made waves in cities like LA, Santa Barbara, and Vancouver—and Tucson’s turn is right around the corner.
