YetepIconic British producer Troyboi is a genre blending master, crafting surreal blends of trap, dubstep, and other genres into his own distinct sound. In addition to being from Britain, his mother is from India, giving him heritage and perspective from multiple cultures. This cultural influence can be found throughout his catalogue and helps his beats stand out. His cultural roots can also be seen in the album cover for Left Is Right. Troyboi’s newest release, “Kabhi” taps into these roots by sampling a song by famous Indian playback singer, Lata Mangeshkar. This single was also accompanied by an announcement of Troyboi’s newest EP, ROOTZ, scheduled to arrive this September. The EP features other acts of Indian heritage such as Jazzy B, Amrit Man, and BombayMami.
“Kabhi” starts out with rolling trap clicks, clap effects, and static charges of bass. A melodic haze steadily rises from the evolving beat. Sitar, flute and Lata Mangeskar’s echoing vocals are intricately woven into the beat, effortlessly swaying with the reverberating drums and wobbles. Bubbling basslines flow into guitar riff like vocal ad libs. “Kabhi” is a fitting tribute to a world class singer whose legacy has left a lasting impact on Troyboi, India, and BEYOND.
“Growing up, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Ghum was played on repeat in our home. My mum is Indian, and through her, I was immersed in the richness of Indian culture — the music, the stories, the colors, the emotion. Sampling this piece wasn’t just a creative decision; it was a way to honor a voice that shaped my childhood and pay tribute to a cultural icon whose artistry continues to inspire the world. Lata Mangeshkar was not just a legendary singer, but a soul who defined the sound of Indian cinema for generations. She’s often called the nightingale of India, but to me, her voice feels like memory itself — timeless, emotional, and deeply spiritual. This is my small offering to that legacy.”
