Who could forget Ellie Goulding’s “Lights?”  The year was 2011, and dubstep was rapidly gaining popularity in North America.  Bassnectar had just remixed Goulding’s record and it was accepted with overwhelming positivity from the EDM scene.  Nitti Gritti cleverly revived this old record by taking everything great about the original and giving it a fun, energetic, and modern twist.  Hitting the play button is an invitation for a flood of nostalgia as the familiar tune plays out.  As the track builds and you think it’s about to drop, Gritti fakes us out with a second, more powerful build-up that brings the tension to unparalleled territory.  Finally allowing the tension to release, the celebratory drop proudly showcases massive, euphoric synth chords that are tailor-made for the festival mainstage, a car ride with your friends, and everything in between.  What really grabbed my attention was the addition of Post Malone’s “I Fall Apart” vocal over the second drop.  While I initially found this off-putting, I’ve come to really appreciate the creativity and unexpected addition of the vocal.  Nitti Gritti is only at the beginning of his career, and he is sure to continue gaining popularity thanks to his clever remixing style and innovative approach to music production.
