Ekali Pulls on Heartstrings with ‘Leaving’

Canadian DJ Ekali is one of my favorite producers because of his fluid ability to move from heavy-hitting dubstep to emotive future bass. Lately, I’ve been bumping his EDC 2018 on my drive to work because the high energy and filthy bass gets me pumped to work. But there’s a mood for heavy EDM and there’s a mood for melodic music sent straight from heaven, and that’s exactly where Ekali’s latest comes from.

“Leaving” features the soothing ethereal voice of Yuna crooning lyrics like, “You know I can’t stop you from leaving / Everybody needs their space for breathing.” The lyrics are heartbreaking and bittersweet, and these emotions are backed by Ekali’s breath-taking sound production. The chill beat, high-pitched voices and synths, and wind chime samples all combine for an angelic, emotive song. Whether your heart connects to the lyrics or your spirit connects to the raw beauty of the music, you’ll be in tears after hearing “Leaving” for the first time.
