YetepEvery time you look into Tiga’s eyes, you see the future. Tiga James Sontag, better known by his mononym Tiga, is a Canadian DJ, producer, and singer-songwriter. His signature sound can best be described as dance music with a pop edge; throughout his illustrious career, he’s become known for his avant-garde style and unique blend of electro with stripped-back techno and acid house.

Born in Montreal, Canada, Tiga spent part of his youth in Goa, India. Enthralled by Goa’s decadent nightlife in the ’80s, he sought to revitalize Montreal’s lackluster club scene upon his return in 1990. With the help of some friends, Tiga began hosting a small series of parties, eventually leading to Montreal’s first official rave. In 1994, he opened a record store called DNA Records, and in 1998 he established his own label, Turbo Recordings.
It wasn’t until the 2000s that Tiga began producing music. His first two mixtapes, “American Gigolo” and “Mixed Emotions,” were well received. His 2002 rendition of Corey Hart’s “Sunglasses at Night,” produced with Zyntherius, was a smashing success and catapulted Tiga onto the international stage.
In 2006 he released his debut album, Sexor, with notable tracks including “You Gonna Want Me” and “Pleasure from the Bass.” His second album, Ciao!, achieved critical and commercial success. Other notable records throughout the years include his cover of Nelly’s “Hot in Herre,” the iconic 2008 single “Mind Dimension,” his 2013 masterpiece “Let’s Go Dancing” with Audion, and his 2014 release “Bugatti,” featuring Pusha T.
Tiga’s latest offering is a double release with Swedish DJ/producer Jesper Dahlbäck. Previously only available on vinyl, “Faxman” is a 303-laden club weapon with a funky vocal hook, while “Acid in My Head” dives into the underground for a psychedelic trip.
Let’s go dancing! Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with Tiga when he performs at Sunbar this Friday, May 5th. Click here to get tickets before it’s too late!
