For me, maturing in EDM meant starting to love house music. Starting out as a basshead, house music was the last thing on my mind and something I stayed away from for years. Now, house music is always on in the mornings; it’s the perfect calm yet fun way to start my day. While I began with more aggressive bass house artists such as Ghastly and Habstrakt, these days I tend to really enjoy house music with complicated rhythms, extremely well-arranged counter melodies and harmonies, or interesting sound design that all give the song another dimension. I wanted to share five of the most interesting house songs that I listen to. Hopefully, you discover something new!
“Run It” by MPH
This song is perfect to start your day and is supported by major artists such as Four Tet. The drop comes before the minute mark, and the melody is cascading muted notes almost vibrating as they go up and down. The melody creates an incredible pulsating experience as the well-constructed beat structure provides a solid foundation for you to dance to. Check it out!
“Corporate Shakespeare” by Mindchatter
Mindchatter is an artist who I am keeping tabs on, as his talent is evident in his discography. This song has incredible vocals, and the groove starts off immediately, using creative sound design to provoke the mind. His bassline serves as a pseudo counter melody and is extremely interesting to listen to. This is a perfect song to listen to on your drive to work, as it’s a perfect start to your day!
“Dreams (Plasma Reflex)” by Subtronics, Crooked Bangs
This song was immediately one of my favorite songs on his latest album and showcases Subtronics’ versatility in production. This song starts off with glitchy sounds setting the tone, with the true bassline not coming in for a solid 45 seconds. Once it comes in though, the smoothness of the bass notes combined with the melody waving itself around is an incredible combo. Crooked Bangs has a perfect voice to set the tone, which is one of drifting endlessly through space.
“Wook House” by In Orbit Dubz
This is one of my favorite house songs of all time, and I love whenever I get a chance to speak about it. This is a space bass house song and is named appropriately. The drop starts off with hollow space bass sounds serving as the melody, but halfway through, the melody turns into these gnarly space bass notes that strike the listener on every down beat. This song is perfect for the drive home from a concert!
“Fear” by NITTI
This song deserves a spot on any summer party playlist. This song makes use of high hollow notes bouncing up and down over the bassline, giving it a water-like feel that is perfect for moving your body to. Its second drop gets much more aggressive, pivoting to a trap drop, with those previously high notes changing tone, really punching it home.
House music is for the soul. Just like electronic music, there are many different avenues of house music that appeal to different tastes. I hope you learned something new, and I hope your days are filled with more house music-driven dances!
