Greatest Album by Album: Louis the Child’s ‘Black Marble’

Albums are a labor of love and offer a glimpse into an artist’s universe where they create entirely new worlds. With a full-length album, an artist can truly flex their creative muscles, crafting a more cohesive piece compared to a single or an EP. Because of that, an EDM album is often dynamic, exploring different facets of an artist’s style beyond just their primary genre.

Welcome to “The Greatest Album by Album” series, where we dive into albums that I believe belong in the top echelon of the industry.

Louis the Child – Black Marble – Released in 2022

Louis the Child are, first and foremost, producers. While it’s amazing that they play live often—something always worth seeing as a fan—you can tell their true passion lies in creating works of art. This is evident in how frequently they release new music, arguably more than most artists you may have heard of. Louis the Child also aren’t afraid to innovate; they’ve made their name by being different, yet relatable and accessible to the average electronic fan. In 2022, they released something that broke expectations in the best way possible.

In 2022, Louis the Child released Black Marble, a true statement piece in their discography. This album is a continuous mix, with each song transitioning perfectly to the next, as if it were a live set. All tracks were new music made specifically for this album, marking a significant departure from their traditional sound. This album is grittier, fusing their production skills with heavy beats. Often, the rhythm is irregular, creating both chaos in their art and beauty through that chaos. “The City is Mine” and “Gritty” are prime examples, with creative, hard-hitting rhythms that truly get your feet moving. My favorite track on the album is “Moombahtron,” a house song with growling countermelody notes that add texture throughout the drop. Louis the Child has performed a Black Marble set only in a few rare situations, with its debut at Burning Man being a highlight.

Louis the Child constantly innovate, and Black Marble is Exhibit A. This album is a true work of art and deserves a full listen-through, making it perfect for a long drive. Luckily for us, Louis the Child is stopping by Arizona for their daytime tour—get your tickets here! I’m praying they play some Black Marble tracks, as they’re sure to get the crowd in a frenzy!
