Jennifer Lee, better known as TOKiMONSTA, has been firing off hit after hit since she began making music in 2008. She’s been breaking down barriers as a female DJ of color, and as an artist. In 2015, she was diagnosed with Moyamoya disease, which constricts arteries in your brain, making it difficult for her to comprehend everyday functions, such as language. Despite not being able to fully understand music at the time, she was still able to churn out her impeccable album Lune Rouge. Tokimonsta is arguably one of the most hardworking and stylized artists in the electronic game, and her tracks speak for themselves. Here are a few of her best:
3. Adorn – Miguel (TOKiMONSTA Remix)
Let’s face it, we all love the smooth and rhythmic vibes of Miguel. Personally, I didn’t think it could get any better. Toki proved me wrong. Without all the hype of a build up and drop remix, TM gives a complete reworking of the song, with a more groovy chorus. Her sound in this track is very virtual. If I close my eyes, it almost sounds like I’m in a sensual Miguel-featured video game.
2. Go With It feat. MNDR
I’ve heard this song countless times before, be it in a mix, a live set, or even just playing in a restaurant. I was surprised to find out that this was one of Tokimonsta’s original songs. The beautiful lyrics combines with the mellow and flowy instrumental to bring us a tune that transcends genre.
1. Realla feat. Anderson .Paak
Finally, my personal favorite Tokimonsta song. But don’t let me sway you, the numbers speak for themselves with 2.6 million plays on Soundcloud alone. Toki has multiple songs produced with good friend and frequent collaborator, Anderson Paak. This song exemplifies all that TM can do, allowing her to dabble with low-key trap beats, hip-hop, and electronic music all in one.
Tokimonsta is an innovator in modern EDM and I can’t wait to see what else she’ll procure for us in the future. If you have yet to see her, you’ll get your chance at Goldrush this coming November. Get your tickets right here.
