Lil Uzi Vert Wins Soundcloud Award for Most Followers Gained in 2016

Soundcloud is a major player in the music streaming industry and was a hot topic for conversation throughout 2016 with the introduction of Soundcloud Go and talk about deals with Sony. However, the fact that Soundcloud has helped a new generation of undiscovered artists get a chance at the spotlight is unquestionable. Like youtube does with video, Soundcloud gives power to the content provider and allows for a standardized platform to share audio files.

While users commonly think of Soundcloud as the primary destination for electronic music, it is also flooded with great hip-hop music. Hip-hop and EDM have become intertwined in more ways than ever including methods of distribution. In this way, the Soundcloud rapper has emerged and is beginning to take over a large portion of the site’s artist population.

The most notable of these Soundcloud rappers is Lil Uzi Vert. Uzi is merely 22 years old and has already reached famed status in the mainstream music market. Lil Uzi’s page went from 0 to 100 real quick, exposing the music that many have come to love. This quick influx of attention has led Uzi to win the Soundcloud award for most followers gained in 2016.
