RB Exclusive Interview: Kaskade talks Kx5, music trends, and Goldrush!

Kaskade is an artist who needs little introduction! He’s been at the forefront of dance music for over 20 years and continues to impress with his ability to create imaginative tracks and unforgettable stage presence. We had a chance to chat with Kaskade ahead of his performance at Goldrush Music Festival this weekend. Check it out below!

The debut Kx5 track, “Escape,” is certainly a contender for song of the year. Did you expect this track to be such an instant classic?

I felt confident when Joel (deadmau5) and I started this project that musical mountains would be moved. We both have visions of where music can go, and if we can lock on the same horizon, there’s always something special there.

You and deadmau5 have a long, successful history together. Is Kx5 an homage to the past, a definitive step into your collaborative future, or something in between?

Yes to everything. Kx5 is basically just us saying let’s try something new and what if it works?? We don’t necessarily have a plan or mission statement (other than world domination but that’s just a general plan always). The elements that might feel like a nod to the past are just organically there because that’s what we’re made of.

You’re one of the busiest artists in the industry. How do you maintain balance and combat burnout between touring, festival appearances, a steady release schedule, REDUX and now Kx5?

Dang, when you put it that way I feel like I need a nap. Ultimately it comes down to my drive to stay interested. That means trying new things, pushing things that are already working, and setting aside stuff that’s not inspiring me anymore. It’s the same for everyone. I surround myself with people that are insanely good at what they do and they make it possible for me to do what I want to do.

Having over two decades of experience, I’m sure you’ve seen many aspects of the music industry change over time. How important do you think it is to keep up with trends? What about rising social media platforms like TikTok?

The music industry is just a living breathing animal. It goes through a developmental stage and suddenly it’s unrecognizable but always has the same DNA. I’m happy to watch and learn and participate in the things that feel right to me. That’s not to say I jump on every trend. That’s not really my thing. I think it’s important to keep offering my music to people who might like it. How they choose to consume it is their thing. If it’s on Tik Tok, vinyl, streaming or watching me live, I’m just grateful that people show up.

Heading into the final few months of the year, what are some goals you are hoping to accomplish still?

Trying to get those mashed potatoes correct this year at Thanksgiving. It’s a challenge but I think I’m up for it.

Arizona loves Kaskade! What can fans expect from your performance at Goldrush Music Festival this weekend?

Same as always. The skies will open, angels will sing, the earth will shake. You know, generally life changing moments one after another.

The Goldrush hashtag is #canyoudigit! What are a few things you’re really digging right now?

Sriracha flavored green peas, Halloween themed peeps, and the optimism that seems to be bubbling up after the past few years. I dig hope.
