YetepSubDocta is a popular modern DJ from Reno, NV who is often credited as the creator of the “West Coast Wobble” genre of dubstep. This genre places emphasis on thick, chunky bass, unique samples, and wonky drops/transitions. SubDocta’s Bass Science EP (2023) follows a similar formula to his prior works. However, one track stands out amongst the others.
“Never” is the final song on the Bass Science EP, which is an excellent thematic choice. The song starts off with a haunting array of synth patterns, including one resembling a guitar riff. Vocal samples echo throughout as the song continues to introduce new elements and build on its foundation. A pleasant wobble accompanies these elements, which leads to involuntary side-to-side head bobs. As the drum effects rapidly speed up, the ominous phrase “We’re not going back, and we were never friends” is exclaimed. This leads into a mid-tempo drop that meshes the song’s original melody with a heavy dose of bass. SubDocta catches us off guard by stopping the song dead in its tracks, only for menacing drums to lead us into the second drop. This next drop subtly ups the tempo by about half a percent and swiftly enters breakbeat territory. Lastly, the chorus is repeated once more, only for the song to gradually fade out.
Much of this track’s charm comes from its versatility. The song’s powerful lyrics can be applied to many different situations. Frustration from failed relationships, friendship breakdowns, or even family-centered issues can all be imprinted into the ghostly melody that SubDocta created for us in “Never.” This is an incredible track that allows the listener to get out some of the frustration that is holding them back.
“Never” has taught me the subtle art of burning bridges and that there can be beauty in catharsis.
SubDocta currently has five US tour dates booked for January and February 2024, but I would not be surprised if more dates are announced. The Bass Science Tour stops in San Jose, CA; Los Angeles, Brooklyn, NY; Denver, CO, and Atlanta, GA respectively. Stay tuned for more info!
