From the underground to the main stage, the wonky sounds of wobbling bass and bouncy rhythms have been taking over the speakers. A hard-hitting genre, riddim is filled with all the best things, heavy bass, roaring synths, ominous drums, and atmospheric melodies. The minimal beats may seem simple but can be mixed and refined into absolutely filthy tracks. These past couple years have been monumental in riddim’s growth as a subgenre, with new emerging sounds and talent cooking up fresh tracks everyday.
Riddim is stacked with amazing talent, with artists such as, Infekt, Bommer, Artix!, Badklaat, Funtcase, Automhate, Decimate, Blankface, and so much more. Each artist and producer is unique in what they bring to riddim. They have all contributed to building to the filthy tracks we hear today. The sounds of riddim have been chopped, distorted, shredded, sliced, diced, and layered all back together into addicting sounds that have led to its ever growing popularity.
Falling down the rabbit hole that is riddim will lead you to infinite new discoveries of guaranteed heaters. You may even find yourself in the depths of the riddim versus trench debate. For those of you who are looking for recommendations to get into the genre or are addicted to the intricate twist and twirls of those silly chops and sways of riddim, I have brought together some of my favorite tracks. Ready the high knees and to break your neck because these tracks are nasty.
Lights Out – INFEKT
Infekt’s “Lights Out” is pure insanity and is one of my all time favorites. Slashing of swords straight into the heavy swings of bass and wompy bounces. A pioneer to the growth of riddim, Infekt magically creates heavy bass tracks with a perfect blend of that OG underground sound.
So Easy – Akeos
Into the next heavy hitter, “So Easy” by Akeos starts with some light electric melodies and then falls straight off the deep end. Jumping into heavy chops and crunches of bass. “So Easy” showcases the classic chops and pounding bass of riddim.
Power Up – Duck Beats
“Power Up” by Duck Beats will definitely get you waddling. “Power Up” mixes low rhythms, electrified spirals, dark vibrations of bass and powerful chops. Duck Beats produces riddim that is pulled straight from the underground. This track is up there in my top three and I highly recommend giving it a listen.
Mexican Riddim – Automhate
Mariachi and riddim, say less! Highlighting his distinctive sound, Automhate mixes his specialty riddim with the sounds of mariachi. The singing trumpets paired with his unique hollowed out bass and crunchy minimal patterns, makes for a high powered track.
Jowellox – Ferra
Ferra’s “Jowellox” samples Phiso’s “Jotaro” and adds in some riddim flare. The extra chompy bouncing wobbles of bass, the switch ups, and chops between the drops add in some extra flavor to the track.
WAKA WAKA – OG Nixin
A recently released heater from OG Nixin, “WAKA WAKA.” OG Nixin layers unique dynamic beats into his tracks paired with his trademark ad libs. Heavy bass, electrified twirls, echoing roars and more, the track is massive. OG Nixin can never miss.
SUELTA EL RITMO – Artix! & Deucez
Artix! and Deucez are two skilled producers of riddim and they brought down madness with their collab track “SUELTA EL RITMO.” Blending together subtle sounds of cumbia with dubstep. The drop may seem minimal but still bass heavy at first but then we’re met with a surprise spiral into absolute chaos. I won’t spoil too much here but be ready for some filth.
Bagnar – MAD DUBZ, Vayre, & phonon
MAD DUBZ, Vayre, and phonon start off their track “Bagnar” with electrified airy beats with alluring climbs into a hard-hitting drop. The track is buzzing with destructive bass and turbulent womps.
Glock Boyz – OG Nixin & Aweminus
Another heater from OG Nixin and collaborating with Aweminus. The two mix trap and riddim in their song “Glock Boyz.” Pounding bass, swinging chops and echoing spirals show off some of that OG riddim sound.
Andros – HAMRO & BloodThinnerz
The bass is bassing in “Andros,” DJ duo BloodThinnerz and Hamro came together and made pure mayhem. The track bursts into colossal pounds of chomping bass and swinging chops. The drops of “Andros” hit straight to the dome, consuming listeners into some hard-hitting riddim.
Unfortunately, I can’t fit every bass-heavy banger into this list but these are just a few of the many tracks that riddim has to offer. Hopefully, after listening to these tracks you either have a newfound love for riddim or have even more love for the genre. Riddim is definitely on the rise and will without a doubt be taking over more stages soon. Be sure to add your favorite tracks from above to your playlists!
