This piece initially began as a one-track review of “Poison” by up-and-coming house music producer OKAYVAL. However, after listening to “Poison” on repeat, as well as some of her other songs, this piece slowly transformed into an Artist Spotlight. This is due to Val’s unique vibe, impressively layered production, and a refined craft despite such a short time on the scene. OKAYVAL is doing big things and is only set to grow her following as time goes on.
“Poison” is the newest release by OKAYVAL, a newcomer in the house scene straight out of the subtropical climate of Jacksonville, Florida. This song has been on repeat in my Apple Music library for a few weeks now and I listen to this song at least once a day, if not more! I discovered this song through Apple’s recommendation algorithm and could not be more satisfied.
“Poision” features powerful lyrics, an addictive chorus, incredible vocals, and a steady danceable rhythm. The production is seamless and impressive for someone so new to the scene. “Poison” takes off right out of the gate with a rhythmic vocal sample and the track’s opening lyrics. “There’s something in the water, I feel it taking over me. It’s slowly getting harder to breathe, to breathe, to breathe.” A subtle, melodic hum is present in the background as a sweeping effect builds us up to the song’s main chorus.
“And I don’t know what’s happening and how, how did it come to this? I saw danger on your lips and I took a sip.” The vocals are incorporated into the chorus of the song SO WELL that OKAYVAL’s voice seems to dance right along with the beat, matching it in both tone and tempo while being layered to perfection. This is an incredible feat and something that even some veteran producers cannot execute well. The first drop contains several elements of traditional house music including hi-hats, thick melodic synth patterns, and a four-on-the-floor structure. Val’s exceptional vocals effortlessly mesh with these traditional musical elements to create a stand-out track ready for the nightclub/festival dance floor.
Another OKAYVAL track, “Rolling,” helped transform this article from a single track review into an Artist Spotlight. This song deeply speaks to OKAYVAL’s legendary house influences and brings her own vibe to the genre. “Rolling” begins with hi-hats, a THICK discernible bassline, and a “rolling through the hood” chant that carries us into the first drop. The bassline becomes much funkier and prominent as the drop goes on. Melodic, laser-like synths and distorted vocal samples courtesy of Val also accompany the beat and add to the song further. Once again, Val’s brief vocal samples are perfectly meshed within the drop, leading to a near-seamless listening experience. Definitely blast this one with the windows and/or top of your car down. This song is bound to make your next journey an epic one.
