SoDown & Def3 Capture the Essence of Summer in ‘It Was All A Dream’

Grab your swimsuit, towel, and favorite speaker to ring in the Summer with funk-master SoDown and special guest, Canadian rapper Def3. Their hot new collaboration, “It Was All A Dream,” captures the magic of the warmer months and the fulfillment that comes from living your wildest dreams. All backed by righteous instrumentation and positive vibes. This is a very positive track indeed. Perfect for all of your summer pool parties and tanning sessions. Enjoy!

“It Was All A Dream” begins with a nostalgic, ad-libbed trip down memory lane, courtesy of Def3. Bringing along some low-ended bass, funky keyboards, and glistening chimes as reinforcements. A few bass wonks later, splashing percussion joins in the mix, as Def3 recants his dreams and aspirations from an earlier period in his life:

“Plotting on a room with a view. Me and my crew, can’t believe the shit we’ve been through. Always knew that one day it’d come true.” He does not forget those who have been with him since the beginning, and it shows! In addition to be grateful for his past and the friends he has made, Def3 is also grateful for his present circumstances, pleasantly surprised that his dreams and predictions came true. “It ain’t easy but I love what I do. The sold out crowds that shout out loud. When we get down, they jump up, make the people bounce.” It has been a long road filled with hard work, but he is grateful for the present success and loves making a living with music. The loyal fans who get amped at shows are also mentioned, as well as their inspirational, contagious energy that gets the whole crowd moving to the beat. This is a perfect analysis of the incredible dynamics that are at play during a live set. “Cause ain’t nobody fresher in town. Homies all around, staring at my folks so proud!” Def3 is genuinely grateful for his fans, but the success he has experienced has also given him self-assurance and confidence. The “homies all around” line implies that his music has brought him around the country (or possibly the globe) and that they spread positivity about his successes to those in his immediate orbit.

Meanwhile, SoDown is shredding behind the decks as usual. This first verse is backed by a thick, club-inspired beat, hip-hop drums, fresh keyboards, and stunning bass. Ending, of course, with SoDown’s signature sax skills. His saxophone adds a whole new vibe to his craft and helps to make his sound stick out. SoDown masters the genre-blend effortlessly every time! Some claps keep the beat going, as SoDown jams out. The drums pick up again, as a majestic bridge leads us to into the first drop. A certified Wonkfest up there with the likes of LSDREAM and INZO that is like traveling through a digital wormhole. AMAZING.

The drop continues to wobble back and forth, accompanied by occasional ad-libs and vocal samples. Dark keys take center-stage, as Def3 continues to reminiscence. Recalling skateboard sessions, guns in limos, reading poetry, and buying vinyl. Some rap influences are also listed here for those who are curious. He also reiterates that he has an excellent work ethic while wishing his friends well and proposing a drink in celebration.

The sax returns, backed by louder crescendoes than the first time around. Also change tempo and pace towards the end of the bridge. Nice production choice! The drums are also more pronounced here. A bombardment of drums, radiating lasers, and unfurling bass lead us into the second drop. This drop is higher in pitch and slightly slower in tempo, creating deeper valleys between wonks. I love it when Djs add a subtle twist to the following drops. Def3 re-raps the first verse, as the song comes to a close with the same instrumentals that initially greeted us in the intro.
