YetepThe MSG Sphere in Las Vegas has introduced groundbreaking technology and a visual experience to the world, unlike anything seen before. Holding over 18,000 people, it boasts one of the world’s most impressive LED video screen setups, spanning over 160,000 square feet of LED screens that cover the inside of the venue. It is also equipped with top-of-the-line technology, including spatial audio that enhances the sound across the venue. This has become the hot spot for artists, as the ability to create an immersive, never-seen-before experience for the audience has very few limits. While currently only U2, Dead & Company, and Phish have played at the Sphere, it is only (most likely a long) time before an electronic artist headlines there, which begs the question: which EDM artist will perform at the Sphere first?
While this is all speculative, I did want to point out several things that I believe have some merit in this debate. First of all, creating an experience at the Sphere is expensive, in part due to the unique visuals that the Sphere provides. Essentially, all of an artist’s visuals would need to be redone in a massive way, and artists such as Illenium have come out and stated that it would take five sold-out shows in a row for him to break even, showcasing the difficulties. This comment tracks, as all three aforementioned artists have had residencies at the Sphere. With this in mind, it’s safe to say that the EDM artist has to be incredibly huge, someone that would be worth it for many people to travel to see.
Another thing to keep in mind is the ticket prices. At least from the concerts that have already happened, tickets are pricey; a night at the Sphere will cost on average more than many small festivals. Because of this, the first EDM artist who performs at the Sphere would most likely be one that appeals to an older demographic who can more likely afford the higher ticket costs. With all of this in mind, I think the first DJ who plays at the Sphere will be Tiësto.
Tiësto is one of those legacy names in the EDM world and has been around for several decades, with many fans who fit that older demographic. His popularity proved itself when he was initially announced to perform at the Super Bowl, an incredibly huge moment for the EDM world. While I do think it is going to be a long time until we see any EDM artists play at the Sphere, I wait anxiously for the day, and it will no doubt be one of the best days in EDM history!
