YetepVersatile vocalist/DJ/Producer Fox Stevenson is back with another candid Drum & Bass release. “Pieces” features fellow DnB DJ Yue as co-vocalist and co-producer, switching back and forth with Fox Stevenson. The track begins on a melodic note with deep, heartfelt lyrics.
“I’ve been taking the time to try. To move mountains within my mind. Feel the weight of the world instead. So we’ll see if I break or bend.”
A shimmering intro gradually evolves into the trademark breakbeats that DnB is known for. Subtle guitars dance underneath the melody and breakbeats. Creating an ethereal and fast-paced soundscape with Fox Stevenson’s signature genre-blending abilities. “Pieces” features a unique mix of old school and modern EDM, with a DnB twist. Yue’s pop sensibilities are a perfect companion to Fox Stevenson’s alternative rock/pop punk vocal harmonies.
The lyrics describe someone breaking down after a failed relationship, but gradually building themselves up again. Previous attempts to mend the relationship were akin to “moving mountains,” resulting in “the weight of the world” falling on their shoulders. These lines acknowledge that mending the relationship seemed like an impossible task, but Yue remained optimistic. Devastated by the unexpected result. The lyrics that Yue sings take place in the present, while looking forward to the future. Fox’s lines mainly focus on the past and reminisce about “all the crimes of the things we built.” His vocals take on a reflective and accepting tone. The switches between past, present, and future create a detailed track and storyline for the listener to follow. The difference in tone between Yue and Fox’s vocals further express the themes and story of “Pieces.” Yue is also a DnB DJ and likely had a big role behind the production of this release.
The DnB breakbeats briefly subside into a gorgeous string-heavy bridge filled with echoing vocals, courtesy of Yue. The old school vibes come back in at full swing. Building into the heavy breakbeats once again. Fading out with Tetris-like sweep effects.
“Pieces” is a wonderful collaboration with perfectly paired vocal performances. The track blends old school and modern EDM production with Fox Stevenson’s signature rock and DnB fingerprint. The single’s artwork depicts the faces of Yue and Fox Stevenson segmented and blended together. A perfect visual representation of the sound behind the song. “Pieces” keeps up with Fox Stevenson’s consistent output and was my first introduction to Yue. This a collaborative dream team and I would love to see them work together again in the future!
