YetepHigh octane producer HEKLER recently broke his ankle, just ahead of his Sunbar Tempe appearance with DUBLOADZ last weekend. HEKLER took this injury in stride and decided to channel it into crafting a heavy-hitting track appropriately titled, “BREAK YA ANKLES.” Putting a positive spin on an otherwise negative event shows HEKLER’s work ethic, sense of humor, and creative nature. The single’s cover art depicts him in a full boot and a pair of crutches, raising one of them in the air triumphantly. HEKLER appears undeterred by the unexpected attack on his ankle. A true representation of the resilience and passion of the EDM scene. The title also plays on the metaphorical headbanging, neck breaking, and “Elbow Throwing” that ravers are known for.
The track begins with screams, laughter, and blaring sirens. A distorted rap flow begins, telling the listener to (metaphorically) “break their ankles, keep it steppin’ and get Hektic.” An infectious, bouncing bassline cuts through the blaring alarms and tapping drum effects. A symphony of sound gradually forms. Leading into a rapid drum pre-build and a glistening sea of synth. Sweeping Trap effects and sputtering drums make up the drop. Encouraging listeners to headbang from side-to-side. The track then hits it second verse, keeping the Trap vibes throughout.
“YOU KNOW WHAT’S COMING!! BREAK YA ANKLES UP!”
The bass becomes extra bouncy as the second drop begins. The drop is spliced with more humorous ad-libs and scratchy instrumentals. Gradually fading out with menacing bass and catchy Trap sounds.
The speed at which this track was produced is IMPRESSIVE. It is as if HEKLER’s first reaction to breaking his ankle (after treatment of course) was to write and produce this track. That kind of attitude and dedication have increased my admiration for an artist that I already respected. HEKLER is at the top of his game and his talent seems to know no bounds.
