RB Exclusive Interview: HerShe

Electronic music virtuoso HerShe has made a name for herself with her unique blend of beatboxing, rapping, and music production skills. This dynamic skillset results in unique collaborative connections and a one of a kind live stage presence. This determination carries over into her personal life and has given a voice to those in need. In celebration of her new release, “HIT MAKER,” I am proud to present an RB Exclusive Interview with HerShe.

How did you discover that you could beatbox?

I once saw Blake Lewis and Doug E Fresh on American Idol in 2007 performing a rendition of Dougies old tune “The Show,” and from there it was over. I was completely obsessed.

How has this skill influence your production style?

I’ve always said production and beatboxing are a beautiful marriage. I can write down my ideas via my voice notes and translate it over to ableton. A good chunk of the time, my beatbox sounds are snuck in my tracks and post processed, sometimes I leave them in raw. I tend to lean towards more fun and geeky drum patterns in my production because of my beatbox brain. My drum patterns aren’t a result of random placement, but what I hear in my head. I’ve even had to simplify over the years to make sure I’m not overdoing it. At the moment, I’m obsessed with producing good call and response melodies, and making sure my tracks are clean and loud! Thank you ableton for actually making it impossible to legitimately clip, hahah.

What inspired you to add rapping to your skill set?

I’ve always written lyrics since before I can remember, pre production and beatboxing. My dad is a singer/songwriter so I guess it’s in the blood!

The sound design on “HIT MAKER” is incredible! What was the creative process like behind this standout track?

I actually made a tiktok about it a year ago cause I never recorded a tiktok on my process before, so I figured why not? The vocals struck my idea at first, then the drums & swingy hats. I thought of the sub bassline first and then followed the same sub pattern as the “ooo” mid bass in serum and processed the hell out of it (shoutout the fab filter and soothe gods). Then I took my vocal idea, created the intro and boooom HIT MAKER was born! I really enjoy fleshing out an idea from start to finish in Ableton. I’m a big fan of writing in midi AND audio depending on the sound, each project feels different which is cool, there’s no “one size fits all” way to start a track for me. For HIT MAKER’s sound design, I was working with VSTs that are my essentials like Serum, Phaseplant, Pro C-2, GClip, Replika, Murdah Melodies, and of course, OTT. Fun fact, I also mix and master my own stuff, and I did so for HIT MAKER. All me, 100% and I’m really happy with how it came out.

Who are some of your favorite artists that you have collaborated with? Are there any artists you would like to work with in the future that you haven’t before?

I loved working with Wreckno, Bass Ventura, Seth David and Runnit! I’d love to work with LYNY, Hamdi, Moody Good and the big man Skrillex. I would just love to be in a room with any of them geeking out over the sounds we could create together. Sound design session from heaven.
