San Holo & SLANDER’s Latest Release is a Beautiful Hit in the Heart

Few things hit as hard as a sing-along that’s also a cry-along. San Holo, SLANDER, and Julia Church deliver both in their new track, “Broken Hearted.” This debut collab is an emotional dubstep ballad that shows what these producers do best: embody the duality of hopelessness and hope. 

The song starts with a slow rise brought to life with Julia Church’s powerful vocals. The lyrics set the stage for the brighter days ahead beyond the heartbreak, “Feel it in the atmosphere, The sunrise ‘round the corner.” A guitar melody—one of San Holo’s signature elements—swims beneath the surface, providing a melancholy tone. 

As the song escalates, so does the despair as portrayed in the lyrics, “What becomes of the broken-hearted? Nights alone when the days are hardest.” The build brings in the powerful mantra, “Got to hold on, you got to hold on.” Then the drop hits with full force. The heartbeat-style kick and glitchy impacts have SLANDER written all over them, and give way to layered synths and warped vocal chops that cut deep. It’s a song that people will undoubtedly be singing at the top of their lungs between head banging.

The dichotomy of dark and light in the song reflect the artists themselves. Dutch producer and musician San Holo, is known for his unique sound that fuses future bass, indie, rock, and melodic EDM—all wrapped in a positive yet emotional package. LA-based duo SLANDER (Derek Alexander & Scott Land) are heavy hitters in the melodic bass world and are known for their potent blend of heartfelt melodies and crushing drops.
