YetepModern bass music legend Subtronics is a sample king and a genius content creator. His social media presence is just as prominent as his presence within the scene. Subtronics is well known for his behind the scenes remixes of songs and Instagram/TikTok videos. “Sploinky Dub” (feat. Grech) and “Itchy Scratchy,” Subtronics’ newest release, both follow this trend. The first track uses a TikTok video posted by Grech in which “the person in the car next to me is listening to some sploinky ass music. WHAMP WHAMP WHAMP!” This is sampled and given numerous sploinky tweaks by Subtronics. Grech is even credited as a feature on the release, adding another layer of lore. These posts also feature live creative decisions and the on-screen sound design process. Giving fans and fellow producers an inside look of a legend at work.
The second release, “Itchy Scratchy” was inspired by a post by paigeewald. In the video, she discusses playing “wonky…woo woo, wubby music” on the way to a festival. Paige also expresses her need for “Scratchy, Itchy brain riddim.” The song effectively builds off of this foundation, adding wonky sounds that perfectly match the original poster’s rhythm and vibe. Mixing thick, “WET” dubstep sounds with shredding riddim razors. The drums go between heavy and lumbering, to rapid and anticipation-building. Paige’s sample expresses approval. Chiming in with “I like the weird sh*t. Give me weird music. THAT IS WHAT I WANT.” The song slows down a bit to better describe what the poster is looking for:
“I want sh*t that goes WOMP WOMP. I want it to like literally go *WOOO WOOO WOOO WOOO* in my brain.” This brings on the second drop, which adds in a pleasant warbling scratch effect on top of the wubs. Closing out an awesome track with a fading, distorted soundbite of the original video. The cover art depicts a cyclops version of an Itchy and Scratchy fight. The iconic duo from The Simpsons with added Subtronics flair.
Subtronics social media presence remains undefeated with this one. His dedication to the scene and his craft puts the passion he has on full display. Sampling from the EDM community’s posts pleasantly surprises the original posters and shows how loving and connected the rave scene is. Fans who share a similar passion to Subtronics may one day be creative inspiration for his next drop. This is a beautiful, heartwarming concept that deepens the relationship between fan and artist. Strengthening the community as a whole.
