Sullivan King has added his own spin to UK-based band Asking Alexandria’s “Dark Void.” The original song appeared on the band’s August 2023 album, Where Do We Go from Here?, and showcases the band’s energetic mix of metalcore, electronic, and classic rock influences. The song contains dynamic choruses, emotional verses, pounding drums, subtle piano notes, and biting guitars.
Now onto the remix.
The Sullivan King rework immediately jumps into the verses with no hesitation. Piano notes, guitars, and nature sound effects accompany these initial verses and provide a backdrop for further expansion. The first chorus is joined by clapping percussion, majestic synth patterns as we are lead into the first drop. This drop is gorgeous, mellow, and glitchy, which directly contrasts with the melodramatic nature of the original song.
“One more chance to fall asleep inside this nightmare that’s taking every part of me,” screams lead singer Danny Worsnop as the song begins to build up for the second time. Intense drums, digital guitars, and wobbling bass abound as we are suddenly thrust into a drop worthy of head-banging and rail-breaking alike. This second drop is about twice as heavy as the previous one, showing off Sullivan King’s incredible range as an artist and producer. It is also the sonic equivalent of falling headfirst into a pit of lasers, surrounded on all sides. The chorus continues to repeat on top of the seamless production before descending into a verse backed by minimal production elements. This works in the song’s favor as we get a small breather to prepare for the third and final drop, a return to the more mellow drop that we first encountered before Danny’s signature voices fades out into the distance.
This is an incredible and unexpected remix that works on every level. Sullivan King is the PERFECT candidate to remix a song from this genre. He has collaborated with numerous metal, punk, and rock bands and singers to create incredible remixes and collaborations alike. I would love to see him remix some earlier Asking Alexandria songs as well. I was a huge fan of their albums Stand Up and Scream and Reckless & Relentless as a teenager and would LOVE to see what he does with tracks from these older projects. Keep up the great work, KING!
Asking Alexandria recently announced the departure of member Ben Bruce. He was the founding member, lead songwriter/guitarist, and backup vocalist of the band and has been a staple in the lineup since the beginning. He will be sorely missed within the band’s dynamic and has moved on to focus on family and his personal life. Best of luck on the road ahead, Ben.
