EDM & Metal: Two Sides of the Same Coin

In the realm of music, genres often seem like distinct territories with defined boundaries. However, the evolution of music has allowed for the exchange of ideas, sounds, and influences. One of these crossovers is the influence of metal music in dubstep. Over the course of the last year you may have heard hardcore band, Knocked Loose’s, song “Counting Worms” thrown into a few EDM sets. At first it may seem out of place, but then the heavy dubstep drop that follows the intense metal build up leaves you wanting more.

Metal music, with its roots in the rebellious spirit of rock ‘n’ roll, has always been about pushing boundaries and expressing intense emotions. Bands like Metallica, Slayer, and Black Sabbath forged a path of heavy riffs, blistering solos, and lyrics that often delved into themes of darkness, rebellion, and societal critique. This intensity resonated deeply with listeners who sought music as a cathartic release, a form of expression for their inner turmoil. On the other end of the spectrum, EDM emerged from the underground dance scenes of the late 20th century, driven by DJs and producers experimenting with synthesizers, drum machines, and samplers. The result was a genre that thrived on repetitive beats, hypnotic melodies, and a focus on creating an immersive sonic experience. EDM quickly gained popularity for its ability to make people move and its potential for endless experimentation. Similarly to metal, EDM has also created a community based upon going against the “norm” and a place where deep emotions can thrive.

The fusion of metal and EDM didn’t happen overnight, but evolved gradually as artists from both worlds began to experiment with each other’s sounds. One notable early example is the emergence of industrial metal bands like Nine Inch Nails and Ministry, who incorporated electronic elements into their heavy guitar-driven music. These bands laid the groundwork for future collaborations and crossovers between metal and EDM. As technology advanced, so did the possibilities for blending these genres. Producers started incorporating metal-inspired guitar riffs, aggressive drum patterns, and distorted vocals into their EDM tracks. The result was a sound that retained the intensity and raw energy of metal while embracing the electronic textures and production techniques of EDM. Artists like Skrillex, who started as a vocalist for post-hardcore band From First to Last, brought their background in rock and metal into the EDM world, creating groundbreaking tracks that fused the two genres in exciting new ways.

The influence of metal on EDM goes beyond just sound—it extends to the culture of the genres as well. Metal has always been associated with rebellion, authenticity, and values that resonate with many EDM producers and fans. Both genres have passionate fan bases that thrive on the energy and emotional intensity of the music. Furthermore, the crossover between metal and EDM has opened doors for collaboration and experimentation. Artists from both genres have come together to create music that defies categorization, blending elements of metal, EDM, and even other genres like hip-hop and hyperpop. This cross-pollination has enriched the musical landscape, pushing artists to innovate and explore new sonic territories.

As music continues to evolve, the influence of metal at EDM shows no signs of slowing down. The boundaries between genres are becoming increasingly blurred, allowing artists to draw inspiration from a wide range of influences and create music that defies traditional classification. Whether it’s through heavy guitar riffs, aggressive drum beats, or intense vocal performances, the fusion of metal and EDM continues to captivate audiences and push the boundaries of what electronic music can be.

The influence of metal in EDM has been a powerful force in shaping the music landscape. By combining the raw energy of metal with the electronic innovation of EDM, artists have created a hybrid genre that appeals to fans of both worlds and continues to evolve with each new generation of musicians.
