Music Video Drops for Yogi and Skrillex’s Track “Burial” Featuring Dennis Rodman as Pusha T

Can I just say I love it when music videos take bizarre risks with the direction of their story. Can I also say I love that in nearly every music video he’s done, Skrillex has taken risks. For example, videos like “Bangarang” featuring a large, french-moustachioed ice cream man being heisted by a group of punk kids who utilize marbles and dynamite to steal some ice cream and his video for “Fuck That” which was highly controversial at the time of release given its violent nature and “un-Skrillex-like” beat. With his new music video, “Burial”, which he worked on alongside Yogi, Pusha T, Moody Good, and TrollPhace, Skrillex shows us again that he’s not afraid to make his videos… different.

The video begins in a barber shop where Pusha T is getting his corn rows fixed up, he lends vocals to the opening. However, when the bass drops is when the strangeness kicks in. A squad of clown faced dancers in the background begin to move their bodies with the sharp sounds and dull whines in the background. And let’s just say, these guys aren’t doing the kind of dancing we’re used to seeing… As Pusha leaves the shop, the dance squad follows scurrilously behind him, almost as if they are his minions. But when, he enters his car, the most bizarre part of the video occurs. Pusha T pulls off his Pusha T mask and reveals himself to be none other than Dennis Rodman.

From here, the dance squad goes crazy, stopping Rodman and his lady friend in their car and unleashing a series of daunting and intimidating dance moves on the imposter. Using his imposing height, Rodman attempts to intimidate the clown posse, but they continue to move around him in their maniacal fashion. With one push, Rodman knocks them all to the ground. The lyrics resonate in the background, “I came, I saw, I conquered, I balled”, they all stand up and begin to run as Rodman walks at them with determination for retribution. He lights a match, “Yogi said get ’em so I got ’em all,” he throws the match, “And turned this bitch into a burial.” The match catches one of the clowns on fire and all of his friends dance around him as he burns alive. Dennis Rodman steps back into his car, unphased by the heinous act he has just committed, and drives away untouched.

The bass drops in this music video play integral roles in the development of the story. Each time it drops, the dancers dance, but each time the dance has a different context. I give big props to the director of the video, Grant Singer, as he has done an excellent job creating a cohesive narrative that goes along with the structure of the song and the lyrics as well. A lot of music videos today have a good narrative, but fail to coalesce with the meaning of the song. I will certainly be on the lookout for more videos directed by Singer.
