The second episode of the SMASH series, titled “Initial S.H.E.” is the only video in the series so far that isn’t directly related to a song from the album. “Big In Japan,” Martin Solveig‘s very catchy collaboration with Idoling and Dragonette, is hinted at in the video, but not heard in full.
Following the epic Roland Garros opening act, Solveig and his manager Lafaille head to Singapore heeding the advice of Fraçois “Professor” Rollin–a very Michael Caine looking character–who makes a small guest appearance at the beginning of the video with a snide interpretation of Sovleig’s new found success.
“Martin Solveig is a DJ who, despite his weak tennis level and early Woody Allen style, is irresistibly ascending the contemporary music chart, knowing however that he will never become the Mick Jagger of the DJ world, but more a sort of hairless King Kong who wants to feel free to buy a baguette in a boulangerie, driven by his naive quest of the one true love, that would bring him out of his shell, instead simply enjoying the multiple sexual opportunities of a successful showbusiness career.”
The second video is more of an intermission to the series providing a light-hearted look into some of the strange experiences with being a DJ. If nothing else, the video further affirms Solveig’s ongoing love with She and Lafaille’s humorous attempt at being the “Manager.”
Catch Martin Solveig this Friday at Wild Knight. Look out for more SMASH videos later this week.
