YetepAs you’ve likely heard by now, in front of over 60,000 people last weekend Madonna made a huge appearance in Miami when she announced Avicii last night at Ultra. This was so unexpected that when I found out what happened ,it took a few seconds to get my jaw off the floor. Now don’t get all weird on me; I don’t rep home girl’s music one bit. I just am fully aware of what a cultural icon Madonna happens to be. Skip to 2:00 for the part that caused all the controversy.
Just to put this in perspective if you’re still not following me, I’ll quickly explain. Almost 30 years before Lady Gaga made being ugly cool, Madonna was changing the world’s perception about powerful women. In terms of pop music specifically, she’s the Michael Jordan of most popular music genres from the last twenty years. Besides Marilyn Monroe, there has not been a more lusted after woman in history. That isn’t even my opinion, it’s just a fact.
With that said, when she surprised the world Saturday night, she showed us that her age hasn’t taken away her coolness. When a fifty year-old woman can get in front of tens of thousands of young people and ask, “How many of you (in this crowd) have seen Molly?” it’s safe to say she’s a legend.
This is just another reason to draw the conclusion that dance music is now officially the biggest music genre in the world. Sorry hip-hop, I know we’ve connected pretty good over the last eight years or something, but you’ve always known you weren’t the main girl. The word techno makes me cringe today, but for a 13 year-old freshman high school student in 2004, it was the accurate one. Seeing techno grow from the underground scene in the United States all those years ago into such a dominant force in pop culture is unbelievable. I’m not usually the kind of guy who likes to pat himself on the back, but way to call this one Teej.
This was Sunday’s lineup for the main stage at Ultra. It’s about half torture and half bliss, but totally worth checking out–live sets and video are floating around if you know where to find them. Armin van Buuren‘s A State of Trance 550 was definitely my highlight as he presided over the crowd like a professor giving the world’s best music lesson to tens of thousands of fans. Ultra decided not to let us embed the videos of the livesets so you’ll have to find those on your own. For the lazy, here’s a recap of Day 3 below.
All that said with Holy Ship leaving out of Miami in January and Ultra looking unmissable in 2013, I need to think long and hard about a move to South Beach post grad. Come December of next year, this guy is homeless and I’m either moving to South Beach, the Bay, or maybe even farther away. After this weekend–all my Lebron hate aside–Miami, you made big moves in helping the decision, I need to move on my decision.
