As one of the scenes most renowned groups for creating music that reaches every heart and touches every soul, Above & Beyond just delivered a 21-track album on Anjunabeats that’s even more breathtaking than their last. We might be used to their powerful, sensory activating songs, from projects like Tri-State and Group Therapy, but Flow State is a hypnotizing ambient journey that may cause a few tears to be shed. But don’t worry, we’re with you. Through exploring the world of glittering overtones, heart-melting piano notes, and calming strings, this introspective album begs us to take a look within and find every part of ourselves that need healing. It’s an inexplicable cathartic experience to hear each song flow into one another, forcing us to revel in the highs and accept the lows as we take this loud journey through life. Flow State may just reflect something uniquely Zen in each of us as the collection asks for meditation, self-reflection, and clarity.
It all began five years ago after Jono Grant, Tony McGuinness, and Paavo Siljamäki attended Burning Man in 2014 and heard renowned yogi Elena Brower lead their sunset yoga session. The trio became inspired by the almost magical power of motivational and meditative healing that radiated from the crowd. This album aims to be used for a meditation and yoga experience, as it includes a 13-minute spoken word by Brower over five tracks to draw listeners in toward themselves and the music. Since, Above & Beyond have opened some of their biggest shows with mindful yoga sets in Gorge Amphitheater in Washington and Huntington Beach. Realizing that each set is a destination where listeners can find common ground makes it all worth it for these UK producers.
Above & Beyond took group therapy to an out-of-this-world level in the most refined, yet cataclysmic way. Breaking down each track would ultimately fail to bring justice to the way this trio is able to make audiences feel. Listening to Flow State will speak for itself, while it asks you to experience your own humanity and find a way to peace.
