YetepWith a catchphrase like “Hakuna Matoma,” it makes sense for Norway’s Tom Stræte Lagergren, also known as Matoma, to echo the infamous carefree bliss in the wonderful phrase with dance-oriented tropical house music. Matoma found music first through playing classical piano, which quickly gave way to an interest in electronic music. After pursuing a bachelor’s in Music Technology, Lagergren, who had already been producing tracks as Matoma, started to create remixes for artists like Jessie J, Akon, Enrique Iglesias, and others. Those remixes led to full-on original tracks like his catchy single “Bruised Not Broken” with MNEK and Kiana Ledé. You can view the accompanying music video below for this week’s Watch it Wednesday.
The video for “Bruised Not Broken” is a pseudo-morbid visual metaphor for putting yourself together after nearly being broken. Cheeky lopped-off heads of Matoma, Kiana Ledé, and MNEK, as well as their accompanying body parts, must dethaw and reconstruct themselves, much like we all have to at some point in our lives. It’s an extremely relatable music video that’s light-hearted enough to avoid deeper triggers.
