YetepThere are few artists who can successfully blend minimal techno with funk, R&B, and pop; SOHMI is one of those artists, making her a perfect up and coming producer to focus on for an Artist Spotlight.
The Korean-American DJ, producer, and vocalist’s passion for music began at an early age, at age 3 in fact, when she learned to play classical piano and began singing. She emerged onto the scene in 2018 with a self-uploaded mix on SoundCloud. It didn’t take long for her to gain the attention of tastemakers in the underground scene of Los Angeles, her current home. She quickly started gaining traction with releases on respected labels like Nothing Else Matters and Astralwerks, as well as collaborations like “Somebody Like You” with Lubelski and RYBO and “Sunday Sunset” with Josh Butler.
SOHMI’s sound can be described as a blend of minimal house and techno with R&B and pop-inspired vocals. Her live sets are often dark and enchanting, punctuated with unexpected moments of emotive melodies. Her influences reflect her eclectic upbringing, ranging from classical to 20th century minimal, jazz to 90’s pop and R&B, and Detroit techno to UK garage.
She’s even been praised by BBC Radio 1’s Danny Howard as “an up and coming artist you should know about” and we couldn’t agree more.
SOHMI will be joining Above & Beyond, Zedd, Troyboi, Green Velvet, and many more at Goldrush Festival taking place September 24-26 at Rawhide Event Center in Chandler. Click here for tickets!
