Five ‘Chase the Sun’ Remixes to Illuminate Your Holiday Season

“I’m flying away, running like the wind, as I chase the sun up, spinning around, circles in my mind, sailing over ground.”

But first…

The one that started it all:

“Chase the Sun” by Italian group Planet Funk was released in the year 2000 and took the world by storm with its cerebral hook and extensive, danceable bridges. A steady, flute-like rhythm is also present in the song’s instrumental “verses.” These musical elements have inspired countless artists and DJs to put their own spin on the timeless track. The progressive structure of “Chase the Sun” lends even more creativity to the remixing artist, leading to some interesting results. Some of which will be covered here. ENJOY!

Ross Munro

Ross Munro is not messing around here. Virtually everything about this song is faster than the original. Though the intro starts off soft, the tempo and vocals are still much speedier than the original. Techno and tech-house influences are layered throughout this remix, along with the iconic hook from its inspiration. These are perfect examples of the unique creative choices that these remixes can make!

As the song gains momentum, we can hear the chorus repeat as other vocal effects from the original are layered on top. These same vocals are later further sped up for maximum efficiency. These are perfect examples of the unique creative choices that these remixes can make! The song repeats its drops and gradually fades out. I like that the song plays vocal effects from the original at an unfamiliar tempo and place within the song. Well Done!

Vintage Culture & Zerb (‘Sunset in Jeri’ Remix)

House fans REJOICE! This remix is for you. From Miami to Milan. This will certainly get you to move and groove. In this one, Vintage Culture & Zerb transport you to a sublime island paradise where everyone has a coconut drink in hand. This is a beautiful rendition of its source material, while keeping in the things that make the original so great. The beat is fresh and perfect for moonlit dances with mermaids and other fictional creatures of the sea! You’re welcome.

Koven

The next song to be covered is British duo Koven’s drum & bass interpretation of “Chase the Sun.” The song begins with an introduction to the chorus of the original and soft piano/drum effects. An atmospheric interpretation of the track’s hook is scattered throughout the production. The drops are melodic and easy to dance to, with a subtle keyboard pattern and the legendary breakbeats that DnB genre is most famous for.

I am not sure if they used effects on the original vocals, or re-recorded them entirely, but something feels different. The end of the “sailing over ground” line right before the drop also seems to stretch a bit longer than normal. Either way, this creative decision makes the song stick out in the best way possible. Another standout track!

DANNY AVILA

DANNY AVILA’s VIP take on “Chase the Sun” is definitely the most cerebral of the bunch. From its intergalactic album cover to its distinct balance of light and dark sound design, the track seems to expand endlessly into the space it depicts.

I would also have to say that this version has the least amount of the original lyrics/vocal effects in the final remix. The lyrics are present only when essential here. However, that is not a bad thing. In fact, the intense focus on instrumentals only adds to the cerebral nature of the song and makes it more effective. This interpretation is quite a vibe. If you like extraterrestrial EDM, this one is for you. P.S. an Extended VIP version has also been released. Happy Listening!

TATO

Ah, yes. We have made it to the longest track on the list. This six-minute wonder begins in the most unique way of any track on this list, by almost not sounding like the song at all. It takes almost a full minute for the hook we are familiar with to greet us once again. If the song was not labeled as a remix of “Chase the Sun” on Soundcloud, I probably would not have recognized it as such until this point. I especially enjoy the brain massage that kicks in around the 1:35 mark and repeats throughout.

This makes the remix distinct and memorable in its own right and are all great creative decisions. This deliberate choice kept me in suspense, which added to the listening experience. The length of this song plays in its favor as all space is evenly filled. This remix is pretty laid back, much like the Vintage Culture collaboration we mentioned earlier. The Planet Funk original is balanced out with a tropical-house kind of vibe, making it perfect for your next island getaway. Calypso-influenced drums conclude this awesome journey, and bring our list to a close.

Thank you for your time. I hope this brightens your winter, wherever you are reading this from!
