YetepSouth Florida DJ Steller is best known for an intergalactic, alienesque sound that blends heavenly highs with thick, bassy lows. Steller’s use of sound perfectly encapsulates the duality of space as we know it: Majestic, Mysterious, and Expansive. In this brief introduction to a FANTASTIC artist, I will discuss Steller’s two most recent releases: “Without You” and “Who Got the Funk,” released November 22nd, 2023 and December 20th, 2023 respectively. GET READY FOR THE FLORIDA SOUND!
“Without You,” a collaboration with AVELLO, begins with an atmospheric introduction and beautifully haunting vocals. This calm intro readies the rocket that will eventually blast us into orbit while echoing “Can I live without you?” The first drop of this song descends into laser and alarm-like sound effects, a mesmerizing feast for the senses. Steller’s immaculate use of bass slithers and writhes in the best way possible, like an interdimensional space serpent. Pummeling drums keep you guessing and build suspense for the track’s final drop, and conclusion. “Without You” closes out with an even blend of ascending, heavenly synth and grimy bass that just leaves you smiling before touching back down to earth. Incredible.
“Who Got the Funk” starts out slow and steady with a vintage vibe to it, straight out of 60s psychedelia. Kaleidoscopic noises take us down a path reminiscent of the famous “Rainbow Road” race track in Mariokart. This journey leads us into movie score-like crescendos and, you guessed it, MORE LAZERS. Steller’s unique use of bass and atmospheric sound is present here, in addition to a uniquely danceable beat that would not be too far out of place at a vintage jazz club. Psychedelic guitar riffs are also thrown in for good measure. What CAN’T Steller pull off? This song really demonstrates Steller’s versatility and unique clash of trap, dubstep, and other genres. If you have been searching for a funky track to play on your space bound journey, look no further. You have found it here. Happy Trails!
