YetepWith one of the most surprising b2b sets at EDC Las Vegas in 2023, MELLODEATH has shown that riddim is truly here to stay. Marshmello back to back with Svdden Death is not something that many would have called to be the comeback of 2024. Many true fans of both will know that this is not the first time that Marshmello and Svdden Death have created music together. The duo released two singles prior to the full EP. Both “Crusade” and “Sell Out,” Svdden Death and Marshmello’s previously released singles, gathered huge attention. With the announcement of a Red Rocks show in addition to a multi-stop tour, these two artists are not only collaborating on music, but also in production. The more that I listen to the album the more I am brought back to a moment in a live set where I have heard one of these songs. Svdden Death, being one of my favorite artist, has this ability better than most. Mellowdeath Vol. 1 is all around a fantastic example of how two artists can come together to create something fantastic.
This not only represents a great collaboration in both sound design and production, but also the transition of Marshmello back to a harder sound. Announcing that he was done with pop music, Marshmello seems to be excited to produce riddim once again and continue to collaborate with more dubstep artists. While Mellowdeath Vol. 1 is one of the best all around EPs of the year so far, “Vortexblade” and “Fireball” are two that stand out to me the most. The latter brings me straight back to Svdden Death’s special set, “Into the Inferno,” where he breathed fire. The energy in this moment emanates through the track and makes you want to go crazy. Vortexblade is simply one of the most wild songs that I have ever heard in all of the best ways. It is everything I was wishing for and should make it into everyone’s best workout playlist.
