Relentless Beats

Album Review: Gorgon City’s Fifth Studio Album, ‘Reverie’

I’ve found myself completely immersed in Gorgon City‘s latest album, Reverie, for the past week. It’s like being in an endless daydream, surrounded by the most incredible soundscape. The title fits perfectly, as “reverie” is defined as a state of being pleasantly lost in one’s thoughts. Gorgon City has a unique way of storytelling through their albums, and this one is rich with nostalgia and deep connections. Reverie is the house duo’s fifth studio album and is out now via REALM/Astralwerks.

Reverie transitions seamlessly from Gorgon City’s timeless, lyrical masterpieces to their gritty, underground club hits. The album opens with the evocative lead single “Are You Feeling It Too?” which is my favorite track. With beautiful vocals set against an emotionally charged backdrop, it evokes a dance vibe from the early 2000s. “Breathe You In,” featuring NORTH’s angelic voice, is a masterpiece with its club-driven beat and dreamy ambiance. “All That You Need,” with Caroline Byrn, brings a sense of nostalgia with its underground undertones and energetic piano riff. The previously released singles “One New Change” and “Biggest Regret” featuring Bbyafricka, are clear fan favorites and significantly helped heighten the anticipation for the album’s release. Another standout track is “How Do You Love,” a passionate dance escape with captivating vocals by Canadian singer-songwriter Mougleta. DJ Pierre from Chicago joins in on “Make It Happen,” an acid-fueled Chicago discotheque collaboration. “Landslide” is an unquestionable highlight, with Poppy Baskcomb’s eerie vocals transporting listeners to a spiritual realm. “Keep Your Head Up,” featuring the iconic Harry Romero, is a hypnotic tech house heater. Stunning house tunes like “You Know It” and “Dreaming” showcase Gorgon City in all their excellence, flawlessly closing out Reverie.

“We wanted to come back with a club-focused album and once we got asked to headline the Yuma tent at Coachella it was a perfect catalyst to get it done for that show and environment. It came together quite quickly, and we loved the reactions we got to the tracks in our DJ sets. We’re really proud of all the tunes on it.”

In its purest form, Reverie is idyllic music with club-driven beats at its core. Gorgon City continues to deliver one of the cleanest productions and remains a key force driving the mainstream embrace of the underground. They’ve added yet another generational album to their impressive catalog—some might even call it the Dance Album of the Year.
