Pauline Herr is an incredible Los Angeles-based artist and a recurring Relentless Beats guest. Her live sets are dynamic and diverse. Playing host to an extensive blend of genres, styles, and vibes. Herr’s specialties are Techno and House. While also incorporating Drum and Bass and Dubstep into her sets (among others.) Her newest collaboration, featuring Marlhy, is titled “Fault Line.” An electronic wonderland with a strong melody, lyrics, and vocals. “Fault Line” is a gorgeous and expansive track. “Fault Line” begins with an atmospheric whistling melody, cascading synth waterfalls, and elegant vocals courtesy of Marlhy. The first verse kicks in shortly after this beautiful introduction.
“(ooh. Two sides of the fault line.) See the cracks. Start to form. It’s the calm. Before the storm. Feel my heart. Hit the floor. Now it’s different Then it was before.” The delivery of these lines splice well with the melody of the instrumentals. The synth waterfalls craft distinct canyons between the vocals. Fluttering patterns that embody Pauline Herr’s signature Butterfly Aesthetic bring us to the pre-chorus and chorus. “You said this world would be ours. So quick stone turned into powder. Yeah I remember so much. You words switched from sweet to sour. Seconds start to feel like hours. Silence keeps on getting louder. Now we’re standing two sides of the fault line.”
When asked about the lyrics by Genius, Pauline Herr shared that “Fault Line” was not originally intended to have “full on vocals” and it was the first occasion in which she called upon another female vocalist to sing. Also sharing that the inspiration for the song comes from “the hurt and anger that come towards the end of a relationship.” This is an interesting revelation given that the track has energetic segments that appear to contrast with these themes. Perhaps this is Pauline Herr and Marlhy’s way of healing the pain and tension from such a bad situation. Marlhy’s inclusion on “Fault Line” is a great creative decision. Her crisp vocals and wide range compliment the production very well.
The fluttering effects continue along with Marlhy’s incredible vocals. Speedy drum effects and a vortex of bass then take over. This vortex transforms into shooting stars. Further evolving into kaleidoscopic and expansive waves of sound. House inspired breakbeats separate these waves, as wompy laser effects roam free. The breakbeat returns before the Techno drum effects go into overdrive. Building great anticipation for the next drop. Spongey sound waves descend into a wondrous mashup of styles. Complete with a Trance-like loop and a concoction of house and techno based drum effects. This is where “Fault Line” is at its most energetic. Various vocal samples echo in the background as the beat shifts to a more atmospheric tone. Metallic whooshes and layers of beautiful keys draw things to a close.
