Austeria is a rising star out of the DC area who has been steadily making waves in the bass music scene over the last few years. Teaming up with artists like Zingara to create dynamic tracks, her production style is dark and ethereal with melodic vocal samples and razor-sharp bass spliced in. “Metamorphosis” is a standout track that shows the full spectrum of Austeria’s production skills and style. In addition to creating noteworthy originals, Austeria has also produced remixes and flips of songs by SubDocta, Pierce The Veil, and Evanescence, continuing her gradual trajectory to the stars.
“NIGHTMARE” is Austeria’s newest drop. The song begins with choppy guitar riffs, ominous ticking, and a swirling undercurrent of bass slowly rising to the surface. Ticking gives way to sharp kicks and sweeping spirals before the drum effects rapidly accelerate. A vocal sample greets the listener before an. awe-inspiring barrage of WUBS breaks down the proverbial door.
“Do you know what the most frightening thing in the world is?! It’s FEAR!!!!”
-Mark Lewis “Peeping Tom” (1960)
This sudden change in tone made me scream in surprise and delight. Heavy drums plamp along with the wall of bass, as a second layer of wubs screeches and rolls in the background. The bass rolls on like a massive shadow ball, as the ticking returns. Distorted vocals ring on in the background as that juicy guitar lick returns. The drums ramp up again, along with metallic strings.
“WHATEVER YOU DO….DON’T.. FALL.. ASLEEP!!!!”
-Nancy Thompson “A Nightmare on Elm Street” (1984)
The thick wall of bass is joined by whooshing wonks on the back end. The haunting vocals repeat as the drop continues. With the tempo and synth ebbing and flowing. Broken apart by new sound elements and dramatic pauses. Concluding with a haunting auditory fog and (yes) MORE TICKING! WOW!
“NIGHTMARE” is a genuine masterpiece of a track and some of Austeria’s best work. The ticking clock effects and subtle guitar licks create tension and theme that pays off in spades. The bass is HEAVY as can be and balanced out by the intro, conclusion, and middle section. The vocal samples fit in extremely well and add storytelling elements to “NIGHTMARE” that fully immerse the listener into the soundscape experience. The vocal samples are from (or based on) Peeping Tom and A Nightmare on Elm Street. Two classic slasher films, with the former considered one of the first slashers ever made. The horror movie references are the cherry on top of this already amazing track.
Based on the single’s cover art, I assume that Austeria’s next EP or Album will be titled Don’t Fall Asleep. “NIGHTMARE” is the perfect introduction to a (possible) new project and creates massive hype for the next singles and full release. Get in on the ground floor to watch Austeria take over the WORLD!
