LUCI’s EDM career began with intergalactic wubfests like “Invade” that were imprinted with her signature sense of style and confidence. Luci also appeared in collaborations with industry legends like DirtySnatcha and Champagne Drip. Her Wicked EP expanded her sound further with its old school genre influences and new wub-heavy production techniques. Her delicate voice was paired with melodic and heavy productions alike. A representation of her versatility and skill set as a singer. After a November 2021 collaboration with Kaivon, Luci took a short break from releases. Returning in October of 2022 with the song, “sleeping pills.” Something was different this time around.
Luci’s EDM collaborations featured her singing short verses and hooks. Her solo work featured her personal fingerprint and a lot of instrumental jams cut with samples and adlibs. However, “sleeping pills” featured extended verses and expansive pop vocals. The song structure of “sleeping pills” was also more pop-focused. Drops were still present, but the instrumentals leading up to them were more mellow. Along with the drops themselves. Luci’s versatile production style and varied skillset helped this transition move along. Looking back, hints of this change in style can be found in songs like the 2020 release, “Till The Day I Die.” A name change from Lucii to Luci also sparked curiosity.
The song “narcissist” dropped in January of 2023, with Luci’s debut album bittersweet dropping in August of that year. This showed that Luci’s new style was here to stay. These new Luci songs were very personal and dove into her journey of love, acceptance, and self-discovery. In addition to pouring her heart into this new album, Luci also remixed massive rock hits like “All Around Me” by Flyleaf and “Decode” by Paramore (among others.) These remixes showed off her vocal range and interpretation skills. The following list will span all of these new developments in Luci’s artistic direction to find my favorites. ENJOY!
5. “Bring Me to Life (Feat. ChillPanic)”
This remix is a roaring interpretation of the iconic Evanescence hit “Bring Me To Life” that brings the song to new places. It is especially cool to see this remixes because I am a massive fan of old school emo/rock. The iconic piano is joined by sweeping strings and Luci belting the classic lyrics. Euphroic hums and a bass storm brew in the background. The remix expands into a heavy cybernetic storm with chunky bass lines and synths. Heavy drums descend into a bridge where Luci harmonizes with robotic, distorted vocals. The drums go into full swing and break into a classic, revving drop, with ChillPanic on scream duty. The next verse is a clash between the heavy instrumentals and Luci’s vocals. Luci nails every iconic vocal bar from the song. The production elevates the dark and beautiful nature of the original. ChillPanic’s gritty voice and heavy screams are perfect for the concluding duet. A fun-filled twist on a classic.
4. “narcissist”
“narcissist” was the second single of Luci’s debut album and rebrand journey. This was also my introduction to Luci’s new direction. I was immediately impressed!
“narcissist” features lyrics that paint a portrait of the end of a toxic relationship. Luci describes the manipulative tactics used by the other partner, as well as her ways of coping. This includes confiding in her therapist and journaling when the other partner lashes out or manipulates. Making her “think that she deserves this.” However, Luci has finally had enough and is onto the antagonist’s tactics.
Every time I think about it there’s a different way you tell it. Manipulating minds now. I guess that’s why they call it gaslighting. Got me questioning my own reality. I see what you’re doing.”
This passage bridges the end of the first verse and the beginning of the chorus. Luci directly calls out the antagonist with the stunning line: “You’re a narcissist. Says my therapist.” This stunning confrontation is a critical moment in the song. Moving the song’s story progression into overdrive. Next, Luci admits to the partner that she “can’t resist the devil in your eyes. It haunts me at night.” This refers to the look in the antagonist’s eyes when they lash out and the manipulative tactics that leave Luci restless. The first verse documents her suspicions, while the second verse is a fact-spit laced with venom. This includes a sarcastic apology about damaging the antagonist’s ego, emphasizing the truth behind the accusations and wondering why they “give a shit” if they broke up with her. The next chorus ends with a bridge in which Luci expresses gratitude to her therapist and quips about the antagonist paying for sessions. This shows the extent of the damage done. “narcissist” ends with Luci’s haunting description of the antagonist’s tactics as:
“Drown my words in duct tape. Just so you protect your name.”
3. “Comfortable”
I was going through a bit of a rough time when compiling this list. In the process, I discovered this gorgeous gem hidden in Luci’s discography. I had never heard this song before and was hooked upon first listen. Everything in this song shines: vocals, instrumentals, and lyrics. Even the single’s cover art takes me to a place of comfort. Luci’s vocals ranges from quiet and timid to soaring into the stratosphere, encompassing the wide range of emotions of “Comfortable.”
“Comfortable” begins with crunchy guitar riffs and a surreal echo. This riff dances alongside Luci’s longing vocals and lyrics, as more elements are introduced. Luci confesses to being “five drinks in” and considers asking her ex to come over. She misses this particular ex more than the women that she encounters in real life because “none of these girls do it like her.” This desire is strong and Luci is “so done with kissing strangers” and wants to try to patch things up. However, not everything is sunshine and roses. Luci admits that “She’s no good for me” and describes reuniting with her as a “felony” and “toxic love.” Akin to “driving down a broken down Ferrari.” This is a creative contradiction that emphasizes the song’s themes.
A light bassline and soft drums rise up under the vocals and guitar riffs. Growing in intensity the closer we get to the chorus.
“Or is it comfortable, comfortable
When I’m laying in her arms?
Am I being irresponsible, irresponsible?
It’s setting off all of the alarms
I’ve tried and triеd, but she has my heart
Or is she comfortablе?”
The riffs ring out through the chorus, exploding into a majestic drop. Hard-hitting kicks duke it out with cerebral whistles and dazzling surges of bass. Rising and falling like the tide. The following verse is very drum-heavy and features my personal favorite passage:
“A cigarette drapes from her mouth.
I want to taste it.
Yeah, they’re both so bad for me.
But I like the way it feels, baby”
2. “Drugs”
“Drugs” is truly a special track. When compiling this list, I thought I was sure of the Top Two spots. However, discovering this song shattered that certainty. “Drugs” is a powerhouse on every level. The vocals take on an addicting R&B-like bounce accompanied by snap effects. A range that Luci NAILS. This R&B bounce is perfect for the track’s plampy drum effects and mesmerizing basslines. the first verse reminisces about “dancing tipsy under the light..Laughing like school kids on the play yard.” The vivid lyrics take listeners back to a time where they felt the same. The chorus describes the intoxicating feeling that this partner gives Luci. Siren-like “MMM MMM’s” and “OOOOH OOOOH’s” are spiraled throughout the verses. Adding even more passion and emotion to Luci’s vocal performance. The basslines from the verses effortlessly roll into the revving bass drops. Balanced out by Luci’s vocals.
The second verse features my favorite vocal bar:
“Wearing my initials around your neck (MMM MMM). So close to your skin, you call it perfect (OOOH OOOH, you call it perfect).”
Luci’s delivery on this line gives me chills and goosebumps without fail. The minimalist production during this section gives Luci’s voice the spotlight. The subtle chirps and squeaks sway with snap effects, welcoming back the plampy drums and bass. A third standout verse ends with the chilling line “Cause if I get my heart broken I might kill” and a well-timed laughing ad-lib. Which is one of my favorite production choices.
“Drugs” showcases all of the strengths of Luci’s rebrand: longer and more intricate verses, a larger emphasis on vocals, and multi-genre blends. This is Luci at the top of her game and an unexpected surprise for this writer. LISTEN NOW.
1. “She Bangs Like A Fairy On Acid (Feat. DirtySnatcha)”
Ah yes, the song that inspired the creation of this list. “She Bangs Like A Fairy On Acid” is a Luci x DirtySnatcha collaboration that has been my daily driver since the beginning of the year. A four-minute epic with descriptive lyrics and intricate melodies. This one starts out as a slow burn with layers of keyboards, delicate vocals, and popping drums. Gradually expanding into heavy drops and back again. Guitars and strings simmer in the background. Giving way to building drums. The prebuild evolves into a drop with razor-sharp wubs and a dubstep backbeat. The track then takes an unconventional turn, with drums accelerating into another chorus. This teases a drop, but leads into a melodic bridge instead. What a curveball!
The next drop changes things up. Trading in the slow-burn nature of the first four a free-form wonkfest. Bass whooshes in and out before the track goes silent, except for the keys. Luci’s vocals emerge. Intertwined with the track elements.
“Switching lanes that’ll take me to the portal. Is it fate cause I’m feeling so immortal? And I wanna..I wanna. Take a bite (HAHA!)”
The beat returns with heavy drums and chunky bass led by Luci’s vocals. Warp effects lead into a shimmering final drop. This is easily my favorite track of the Luci Rebrand era and I cannot recommend it enough. The lyrics and vocals paint a picture of a beautiful but commanding fairy that has enchanted Luci to her core. DirtySnatcha’s heavy wubs are a testament to the pleasant chaos that this fairy is causing, while the verse’s instrumentals capture her enchanting nature. Luci’s extended verses are perfect for the progressive nature of the beat. Making this song a true testament to the artistic evolution of Luci. I cannot wait to see what she brings us next!
