YetepThe Weeknd surprised his fans by dropping a new EP recently with almost no warning at all. Promo for the album started the day before it was released when the Weeknd posted a screenshot of a text conversation between him and his creative director, La Mar Taylor. The text said “Should we drop Friday? I’m indifferent to be honest.” The next night–boom–new music in the form of My Dear Melancholy.
My Dear Melancholy is Abel Tesfaye’s return to the dark, brooding RnB sound we first heard from the artist years ago. Not as familiar is his choice of collaborators, including Gesaffelstein who we haven’t heard much from since 2013. Skrillex, Nicholas Jaar are said to have helped in production in addition to Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, another dance music legend whom the Weeknd worked with on his last release, Starboy. If that name doesn’t ring a bell, it’s probably because you know him better as one half of the robot-rockers, Daft Punk. The production is mostly handled by frequent Weeknd collaborator Frank Dukes but you can hear the other producers styles in each song.
My Dear Melancholy is a beautiful addition to the Weeknd’s already great catalog.
