Marshmello Releases A ‘Happier’ Bop

The best collaborations tend to come from indie bands and electronic producers because of the “sugar and spice and everything nice” effect. This effect is clear as Marshmello  is back on his collab game with his latest electro-pop single “Happier.” Marshmello has already worked with a sweet list of artists this year, but this one, in particular, stands out for its emotional layers. Dan Smith, frontman for the band Bastille, originally wrote “Happier” and realized it would work nicely as a collaboration, and who better for a sweet melancholy track like Marshmello?

British indie band Bastille, perhaps best known for their track “Pompeii” have a thick, emotive quality to their music. Comparatively, Marshmello’s music is delicate, while still being powerful. Dan Smith’s full, yearning voice singing “I want to raise your spirits / I want to see you smile but / Know that means I’ll have to leave,” has a heavy crest-fallen tone, but Marshmello’s production adds a mellow joy to keep it from being too morose. Marshmello and Bastille have designed an emotionally-dimensional track together in this balanced indie electronic bop.
