YetepThis Friday was a huge day in music as three artists dropped three albums each uniquely their own. The first is the first studio album from Canadian producer Kaytranada who released the remarkably relaxed 99.9%. Following is another very lax piece from English electronic producer James Blake with his third album The Colour in Anything. Finally, we will discuss the latest from Grime legend Skepta and his album Konnichiwa.
Kaytranada – 99.9%
The debut album from Kaytranada truly opens the doors to everything that is Kaytranada. The album is a diverse experiment of sounds, collaborations, and themes. The albums chill vibes make for a relaxing, yet appropriately perplexing, journey into the mind and the music of an individual who is more interested in letting us figure out what his music means than telling us flat-out.
The album features massive collaborations with AlunaGeorge, Anderson .Paak, Syd the Kyd, Vic Mensa, and many more. Check it out on Spotify:
James Blake – The Colour in Anything
A digital revolution has grabbed a hold of soul music in the form of James Blake’s The Colour in Anything. The album is haunting, it’s inspirational, it’s thought-evoking, it’s poetic, it’s transcendent, but most of all the album is an testament to the endless possibilities of musical expression and the infinite capability of producing music electronically.
This album is purely James Blake (aside from a single collaboration with Bon Iver). The album is full of incredibly progressive sounds and a studding melding of singer/songwriter indie sounds and experimental hip-hop beats, along with Blake’s groundbreaking soulful vocals. The album can be streamed in it’s entirety below:
Skepta – Konnichiwa
The great Grime album is possible, and Skepta is the one to deliver it. The UK Grime artist has dropped his new album Konnichiwa which was debuted live from Tokyo. Proving that the genre is alive as ever, Skepta has teamed with fellow musical professionals such as Pharrell Williams, Wiley, BBK, D Double E, ASAP Nast, Young Lord, Jme, and Novelist to create this driving force of musical power.
From the opening and title track “Konnichiwa” to his collab with Pharrell “Numbers” all the way to the end with the closing “Text Me Back”, Skepta has created a true-to-form album that encompasses everything the artist is capable of while remaining true to his to-the-core Grime identity.
