YetepThe Knocks are a duo from New York that got their start as college roomies, producing out of their tiny NYC apartment. After gaining recognition for their mixes of Katy Perry, Ellie Goulding and Jay-Z’s entire American Gangster album NME names them one of the ’20 hottest producers in music’. They have a retro-future, disco-kissed sound that just makes you want to dance. Last year was huge for The Knocks; they released their debut album 55, a handful of singles and joined Justin Bieber for his Purpose tour across Europe. So far just this year they’ve released another EP, Testify, and now this new mix that captures the essence of New York City in the late 2000’s. The Knocks released this statement with the mix:
“We started coming up in NYC when dance music was just beginning to make waves into the mainstream and clubs were playing new and experimental sounds that were raw, authentic, sexy, and fun.. We loved the open-format and genre-fusing approach that came to define this era of NYC nightlife between 2008-2011 ish. This music and this scene inspired us as artists and shaped the music of what The Knocks is today.. We miss that music and those vibes so we put together this mix to give you a taste inside that madness.”
It’s been my go-to mix since it came out last month. You can’t help but feel good and groove while listening to it.
With the first track I’m hit by a wave of nostalgia, both from the throwback tune and retro vibe. This continues for the next hour as tracks from Lana Del Rey, Emprie Of The Sun, Tommy Sparks and so many more get remixed in expert fashion. Check out the full tracklist below:
