Producer sensation Mickey Valen kicks off his year in music with his latest catchy creation: ‘Ur Perfect I Hate It’. Featuring a perfect fit for Emilia Ali’s relatable lyricism and smooth vocals, the track clearly encompasses both artists at their best; and at only 2:20 minutes long, the single wastes no time in locking you into its unique groove. Valen’s production style stands out once again with his ability to merge his dark and mysterious sounds with a smooth and optimistic undertone, including a guitar hook which will undoubtedly stick in your head for days.
This track is an instant classic. With Valen’s evident production skills and Ali’s alluring vocals, this combination was perfection before it ever began. In the very first moments of the song, Mickey creates a captivating atmosphere – one so soothing that we almost don’t want to leave it. Soon, we are swept off our feet by Emilia Ali, as she spins a tale of a love too good to be true. As Ali tells her story, Valen provides a picture-perfect electro-pop beat. Then, in due time, the beat progresses and builds towards its inevitable destination: a gorgeous drop with a catchy chorus.
While the track is excellent from start to finish, one can’t help but be intrigued by the title. On the surface, it seems to contradict itself, but, upon closer inspection, there is much more to this title than one would’ve expected. Ali explains, “When you’ve been through sh***y relationships, it’s difficult to accept when things are actually going well with someone. When I was writing this song, it occurred to be that I’d been seeing the same person for 10 months exclusively, and I was like- oh f***, this is real now, so if something goes wrong it’s gonna hurt… In a weird, self-sabotage-y way, it’d be easier if something went wrong soon, cause then I could leave before I get really hurt.”
In reality, however, Emilia Ali knows, “…the truth is I’m just really happy with my relationship right now… It’s easy to get caught up worrying about things that haven’t happened yet, but in reality, it’s really cool to feel happy with someone.” And that, our friends, is the origin of this beautiful tune, “Ur Perfect I Hate It.”
