YetepThe elegantly profound multi-genre artist K. Flay has been continuing to diversify her sound one track at a time since her beginning as a parody rapper. Starting in the early 2000s, she dropped her debut laptop recorded mixtape, Suburban Rap Queen, once she found her talents superseded her. Born Kristine Meredith Flaherty, she built her fan base with continued releases worthy of the monumental audience love and recognition from the scene. She’s self-released, dropped tracks on RCA, and became the first artist to sign onto Night Street, Imagine Dragons’ label run by Dan Reynolds. Her sound is electric and irresistible, but not easily defined. She melds together hip-hop, indie, and electronic all while making distinct tracks for each genre.
K. Flay’s latest release sees her working with Fueled by Ramen recording artist, grandson on “Peaches (Text Voter XX to 40649).” The track is a powerful acoustic performance that interweaves introspective lyrics with booming melodies and loud instrumentals. It’s one that needs to play on blast as you swoon to the sentimentality and rage against the pain that made you. grandson and K. Flay want to know when you turned pain into “Peaches,” so listen to the track below and savor in its sweetness.
grandson took to twitter and said of the track, “It’s about making a good thing out of the bad things. It’s about triumph and tragedy, love and loss, and it was a pleasure to write with my dear friend [K. Flay].”
In addition to having a powerful message, “Peaches” is the first installment of grandson’s XXwhy project, during which he’ll release a new acoustic song with another artist for every month leading to this year’s presidential election. Accompanied by a podcast featuring discussions and performances, this project urges voters to participate and enjoy some amazing music at the same time. “Text Voter XX to 40649.”
K. Flay helped kick this project off in a colorfully poignant way. You won’t want to miss her at Louis The Child’s Here For Now Tour alongside Big Wild, ilo ilo, and LTC Playground Set on April 17th. Get tickets to see them at The Park at Wild Horse Pass here.
