Wonk champion GorillaT, rising stars Xotix, and hip-hop artist Pure Powers have teamed up to bring us a new release, titled “Ape Shit.” In my last GorillaT article, I mentioned that GorillaT should collaborate with more rap and hip-hop artists. “Ape Shit” follows this positive trend in the producer’s evolving sound and absolutely DELIVERS!
“Ape Shit” features GorillaT’s classic wonks and wubs, while duo Xotix provides a bass undercurrent straight out of outer space. Pure Powers’ deep vocals and effortless flow provide a perfect tapestry for the styles of the other artists to intermingle with. Consistent primate, ape, and King Kong references can be found throughout, leaving GorillaT’s distinct fingerprint on the pulse of this song. The single’s artwork depicts a large mechanized gorilla (with three eyes, no less) standing in front of two smaller monkeys who look quite intimidated by the massive presence of the aforementioned gorilla. Xotix’s blob-like avatars can be seen on the shoulders of these monkeys, as well as inside the three interlinked capsules to the sides of these figures. A true showcase of the collaborating producers’ respective and artistic vision.
“Ape Shit” starts off with ad-libbed maniacal laughter courtesy of Pure Powers. This type of ad-lib adds a lot of the artist’s own personality to the mix, and is always a welcomed song element. Pure Power’s verse starts off as such:
“All my life been raging. Been going ape shit, ain’t no vacation. Pass the novocaine, I’ve been aching from chasing money trees. Imma get weird and my pockets deep…Now I ain’t gonna talk about UFOs. Beam me up Scotty, I’m phoning home. Keeping it cracking, it’s four in the morn. Putting in work like I’m mowing the lawn. King Kong ain’t got shit on me. Greenbacks, dead presidents fill my jeans. Hands up, it’s a stickup, I demand something. On the count of three go apeshit and MOSH WITH ME!” Raps Powers over steady wonks and splashy bass.
Phasers are set to stun, as Xotix’s interplanetary sounds trade off with GorillaT’s wonks in a battle for the ages. Powers counts up, as GorillaT and Xotix come in with FULL FORCE. Crystalline laser-like sounds can be heard under the wonks. This has Xotix written all over it. This is a great meshing of talent and skill. Well done!
At this point, the lasers and wonks have formed a symbiotic relationship, as guttural bass marches along to the beat. Whistling, paranormal sounds float in and out of the track like an apparition, as the drums keep the beat grounded and steady. Metaphorical lasers fire off in all directions as the track begins to fade out with Power’s maniacal laughter still in tow. This was my first exposure to Pure Powers and I am quite impressed with his flow and delivery. I will have to check out his full discography at a later date.
All I can say is WOW! This is yet another knockout track from the gorilla man himself, with his guest producers easily incorporating their own style into “Ape Shit.” This song has DJ DIESEL levels of hype and carries the same undeniable presence as the famed athlete turned DJ. “Ape Shit” is a MASSIVE track that references extraterrestrials, Star Trek, King Kong, and ET. All well know entities and properties. There is a lot going on here and there are lots of hidden sonic treasures within “Ape Shit.” Definitely check this one out and add it to your best HYPE playlist. Enjoy!
