YetepYou may know Shiba San for his work with CID, or maybe you’ve heard the Tchami remix of “I Wanna.” Shiba San got his first big break after the success of his track “Okay” in 2014, which released on dirtybird and licensed to Ultra Records. If you haven’t heard of him, he’s a tech house producer originally from the french hip-hop scene in Paris. After falling in love with the sounds of Chicago house, he started producing his own tracks blending his hip-hop influence with house music. We actually did an exclusive interview with Shiba San, so if you want to learn more about his background be sure to check that out. He started a label in 2015 called Basement Leak, which has consistently released tech house bangers ever since its inception. His recent release “Deeper” is through Basement Leak and has already hit over 40K streams on Spotify in a week, showcasing the power his label has built over the years.
“Deeper” is a tech house track with hip-hop style vocals that build up to the drop. It has a wobbly bass on the drop and leaves lots of room to hear the low end, while simultaneously building into the next break and build for the track. Before the second drop I hear some potential french house influence with a filtered sample that only plays a handful of times to fill space. It’s refreshing to hear something so original on a tech house track and done so carefully that the average listener might not ever notice. This entire track is filled with small fills and patterns that are complicated but intentional. Although I know Shiba San for some of his more popular work, this track has left me curious about the rest of his catalogue.
After a quick YouTube search for “Shiba San DJ Sets” I found that he has played for MixMag, DJ Mag, at EDC, CRSSD, and most recently The Concourse Project. He played at Sunbar Tempe in 2023 and will be back for more on September 7th with CID. They’re working together on a new duo project called ALL U NEED, and honestly all I need is to go see this set when they’re here. If you’re a fan of tech house, check out his set for The Concourse Project and if you like what you hear, grab some tickets when he comes to Sunbar. You can click here to check out the tickets.
