YetepAs a writer, I love covering debuts, up and comers, and unexpected collaborations. This makes the announcement of Opal Drums an especially interesting piece of news. The project is a joint effort between UK producer Jon1st and Denver’s own Mux Mool. Opal Drums bonds the US and UK sounds into one effective package. The debut single, “Burning Hammer” recently dropped, drawing inspiration from “speculative cinema, manga, and video games“; while using extensive intergalactic metaphors to cover themes such as “transformation, uncertainty, and awe.” The unique talents of this duo come together to create an intricate and effective sound. Capturing the chaos that humanity is facing in our current state.
“Burning Hammer” begins with a flowing stream and steadily rising harmonies. Melodic techno drums and synth dance in the green-lit glaciers present in the cover art. The radioactive sound waves create a steady and atmospheric sound, while the subtle kick drums give the track rhythm without fully taking over. These elements create a “balance of opposites” and a “tension between elegance and power“; according to the track’s press release. This balance can also be found in the duo’s name of choice, reflecting the contrast between a beautiful gemstone and HARD HITTING drums. “Burning Hammer” is a soothing and progressive track with a ton of intricate details to be uncovered with repeated listens. The metaphors behind the track and artist name give me a lot to look forward to and I cannot wait to see what Opal Drums does next!
“This initial body of work from us is all about introducing the listener to what Opal Drums will sound and feel like,” the duo shares. “We’ve been intentional in creating more of a cohesive ‘musical aesthetic/identity’ with a multi-genre approach rather than focusing on one subgenre or tempo, with the intention of creating a preview of what’s to come from us in the long term.”
