French producer and guitarist Massane has been on the rise since 2020 when he released his debut EP on Lane 8’s label, This Never Happened. He’s since released 5 more installments of the EP series and a debut album, Another Dawn. His rich melodic music has caught the attention of fans and peers, and now he’s taking that music on the road. We spoke with Massane ahead of his upcoming tour. Check it out!
Your upcoming North American tour starts in March. How do you prepare both mentally and physically for a tour run?
Before those runs I really dedicate a few hours per day to tweak what I really want to propose to the public, so mentally I’m confident when the shows comes. Physically, I have decided to limit alcohol greatly, eat clean, do sport almost every day and I avoid staying up too late. Then during touring my sleep/sport/eating schedule goes completely off track, but it’s less problematic because I’m ready for it.
How does playing in North America compare to playing in Europe?
Unfortunately, I’m not the best to compare, my project started during the pandemic so no shows were available back home in Europe. Thanks to Lane 8 and This Never Happened my music got mainly heard in the USA at first, so for me, it was logical to focus on playing there. For the moment, with my little experience, I would say that both audiences are amazing and very receptive.
How has it been working with Lane 8 and his This Never Happened label?
Very smooth, Lane 8 is an established artist and knows exactly what he’s doing. His experience is very valuable and I’m really glad to benefit from it. The label takes risks, the vibe is beautiful so I really like them and want to continue releasing music there.
What prompted the transition from your earlier glitch-hop vibe to a more melodic house sound?
I was really researching back then, glitch hop was an amazing sandbox to me, but if you look at my projects on my old computers 80% were more like what I do now, I was just not releasing it. I was a beginner and most things I was making were not good, that said I kept some techniques from making glitch hop that are still infusing my sound today. I could have the exact same reflection with metal music, that still inspires me to this day.
What are some of your favorite tracks right now outside of electronic music?
Red Hot Chili Peppers – DosedElsiane – Hybrid
Pinegrove – Old Friends
Elbow – Friend of Ours
Andy McKee – Rylynn
Chilly Gonzales – Freudian Slippers
Ben Howard (everything)
You played some iconic venues and festivals in 2022! What were some highlights, and what’s on your bucket list for 2023?
My first show in the USA in San Fransisco was crazy, a dream came true, the venue was amazing and the crowd was electric. Red Rocks was something very special, the venue have incomparable energy.
I’m not sure what I can share yet for 2023 because some things are not yet officially confirmed, but I’m really excited for my upcoming tour.
