Subtronics is proving himself as a generational talent, and his ascent over the past few years has been nothing short of meteoric. He’s stayed true to his signature sound, a fusion of tearout dubstep, space bass, and intricate beat structures, all while consistently pushing boundaries and churning out fresh tracks. With the news of his multiple headlining sets at various summer festivals, I thought it’d be fitting to revisit five of my favorite classic Subtronics tunes—these are absolute must-haves for any basshead’s playlist!
“Mad” by Subtronics, Moody Good
Released in 2019, this track still packs a punch today. A collaboration with bass legend Moody Good, it boasts incredibly creative sound design, using elongated bass notes as the foundation for its dubstep drop. The result? It’s like witnessing the birth of new galaxies amidst the chaos of space, a truly spectacular auditory experience that seamlessly blends multiple dimensions into one heavy, yet endlessly imaginative, track.
“bRoKeN cOdE” by Subtronics
This one’s a showcase of Subtronics’ technical wizardry in production, delivering a bass-heavy banger that’ll knock your socks off. Kicking off with a glitchy combination of sounds, the drop wastes no time in hitting hard, maintaining its glitchy essence while introducing heavy bass notes that’ll have you headbanging in no time. While it follows the rhythmic structure of many dubstep tracks, Subtronics elevates it with his signature high pitched sounds, injecting a fresh volume into a familiar rhythm.
“Lullaby” by Subtronics, Virus Syndicate
While Subtronics is undoubtedly dubstep, this track showcases his innovative streak within the genre. He’s a master at crafting catchy rhythms, evident in the infectious hook that leads into a drop both heavy and expansive, taking listeners on an insane journey. Despite its complexity, every element of this track harmonizes perfectly, with a second drop that takes the wave-like sound to even greater heights. It’s a definite must-have for your bass playlist!
“Glitch Fight” by Subtronics
Though released before “Scream Saver,” I often draw comparisons between the two due to their similar vibes. Both rely on high-pitched arpeggios, but “Glitch Fight” uses them as accents to its heavy bass-driven core. The hook here is nothing short of insane, expertly building tension for the thunderous drop. This track also showcases Subtronics’ mastery over complex rhythms, stimulating the brain while delivering a relentless sonic assault.
“They Call Me” by Subtronics
Arguably the sleeper hit of this list, “They Call Me” deserves all the praise it can get. It’s not your typical tear-out dubstep; instead, it’s a hybrid of dubstep and future trap, and the fusion works like a charm. While it retains its heavy essence, the high-pitched future trap melody adds a unique flavor to the mix. Subtronics expertly utilizes his signature high-pitched sound, punctuating it with space bass accents to create a truly captivating sonic journey. It’s been on repeat for me, and I hope you enjoy it just as much!
