Joker (AKA Liam McLean), is an eclectic artist from Bristol, England who first hit the scene in 2007. His style is dynamic and wide-ranging. Earning the attention of industry titan Skrillex. This resulted in a collaboration also featuring Sleepnet titled “Tears.” Joker has released an extensive number of singles, EP’s, and albums since 2007. Showing no signs of slowing down. He has also worked closely with Kapsize Records to produce several releases. I recently went to Southern California to visit home and caught a Joker set in Downtown Los Angeles. It was a euphoric experience that gave me goosebumps and chills throughout. His set drew inspiration from a wide variety of genres and styles. From ethereal and progressive mid-tempo to FILTHY bass-face inducing heaters (and everything in between.) Joker can do it ALL. Read about this incredible artist and a couple of his standout releases below.
“Purple City,” A collaboration with Ginz, is our first stop on this Artist Spotlight. This is a knockout track that is well-layered and well-produced. “Purple City” begins with a notable drum beat. These drums are supported by a techno-inspired backbeat and digitized cymbals. Creating a massive, rhythmic foundation for the bass and synths to work upon. Multiple layers of gelatinous bass flood in, as ear-tingling splashes extend into soaring crescendoes. Metallic clicks bounce around like colliding marbles, while the velvety bass rises and falls with the beat. Descending into multiple shifts in tone and tempo. The splashes give way to chunky downtempo bass and wavy spirals, before looping back to the previous soundscape. The jungle and techno-oriented drums return as the beat continues to loop around them. “Purple City” concludes with splashes and immense walls of bass. This track demonstrates the incredible skills and versatility that help Joker stand out.
“Psychedelic Runway” is a journey of a track that exudes an unbeatable vibe. The title is fitting and gives listener’s a glimpse into what can be found within this gem. A heavy drum fill kicks things off with a BANG, as electric keys, introspective bubble effects, and metallic cuts make their presence known. Chimes, a unique drum beat, and old school spongey undertones add to the vibe of “Psychedelic Runway.” Fuzzy bass wubs work with these elements to steadily guide the track through the take-off process. An intricate introduction to a stellar track.
The initial keys and drum fill help to bridge together different sections of the track as it progresses. Wonks appear and disappear at Joker’s will as the beat gets CRUNCHIER. Shapeshifting like a translucent apparition. The bass hits incredible low-ends and euphoric highs. Shimmering chimes begin to play a more prominent role in the track around the 1:11 mark. Separating (and bridging together) the ever-shifting bass and synth patterns. The rhythm remains steady for a while, before virtually isolating the drum and bass effects. Progressive synth waves then come into frame, as distorted vocal samples and scratches abound. The bass becomes spongier and breaks off into several smaller waves. Wubbing along at free will. Many of the previous elements in the song return. Including (but not limited to) the sharp waves, full-bodied drums, and bright bubbles. The song gradually fades out with one last dose of drum fills and cerebral keys. “Runway” is a dynamic track that mixes classic and modern styles of EDM into one convenient package. This is a gorgeous mix that has immense talent and replay value behind it. There are many hidden easter eggs within this track to thrill new and experienced EDM listeners alike. Joker’s industry reputation precedes him. He is a versatile DJ, producer, and artist who has a near-telepathic ability to read the crowd. Creating an indescribable vibe and atmosphere around his performances. His performance in DTLA was so amazing that I barely recorded. I was lost in the moment while enjoyed the company of great friends. Joker’s set was a highlight of my visit home. You should definitely catch this international artist at a club or festival near you if the chance arises.
