International Artist Series: Meet BADVOID

December 11, 2024
With this week’s fresh batch of EDMovies we bring you tracks from some of the biggest names in the world and from some names you may not be too familiar with. The music videos this time around are very story driven, which is always nice to see in a music video. In fact, I believe that that is how most to all music videos should be: story driven. Understandably, some tunes work better with a collage of images or just a series of colorful palettes, but when a song is placed over a story, audiences become more emotionally attached. You get a preview of the power of both sound and imagery, and what it is like when they come together to create something even more powerful than what already exists. This week, take a look at the power of sound and imagery combined with the works of Steve Aoki and Fallout Boy, Flux Pavilion and Riff Raff, The Chemical Brothers, Shift K3Y, and Digital Farm Animals.
Steve Aoki feat. Fall Out Boy – Back To Earth
A track originally released on Steve Aoki‘s Neon Future vol. 1, “Back to Earth” is the collaboration with Fall Out Boy that no one really saw coming. It is difficult to say whether the track sounds more like Steve Aoki or Fall Out Boy, but I’d say that it is almost one in the same given Aoki’s recent transition into more pop-sounding anthems. “Back to Earth” goes right along with the future theme of Aoki’s album, as does this video which features a woman dressed in and ivory gown running through the forest taking out Daft Punk-looking soldiers with a laser gun. About midway through (as it should be in proper storytelling structure), something happens that changes the stakes of the story, as well as introduces a very Jesus-like Steve Aoki. Check this one out!

Flux Pavilion feat. RiFF RAFF – Who Wants To Rock
Flux Pavilion is back with his new video for the single, “Who Wants To Rock”, with RiFF RAFF rapping over the track. This video has been labeled as “every nerds fantasy” following a very… introverted… gentleman who is just trying to sneak a peak at the beautiful women working out in their tight and bright spandex. Animatedly so, the video takes us inside the gym where all of the women playfully and sexily workout to satisfy the thirst of our odd protagonist. And in traditional fashion, the video ends with our character learning that what we want is not always what we get. Check out this bouncy trap song and RiFF RAFF’s latest hairstyle below!

The Chemical Brothers – Sometimes I Feel So Deserted
This one is certainly the strangest of this week’s videos, but I guess that’s just what you get with a music video from the legendary Chemical Brothers. “Sometimes I Feel So Deserted” was the first track released off of their latest album, Born in the Echoes, and carries with it an ominous series of synths complimented by minimal lyrics and sharp metallic hums. This is one of the more story driven videos I spoke of in the introduction to this article. Brutal is a good way to describe this video. Our lead character hobbles across the cool-hued desert until she finds a gas pump which she proceeds to insert into her neck. It would appear that she gains some type of power from this. She is being chased it would seem, and when she runs into another being who also looks like he’s trying to escape from the same people the two of them combine forces… literally, to take out a common enemy.

Shift K3Y & Born Dirty – Misbehave
Taking a cue from the porn industry and pin-up models alike, Shift K3Y and Born Dirty take their perky track and treat audiences to a display of magazine covers and posters come to life set to the sound of their track “Misbehave”. Warning, this video is not safe for work, featuring play nude and close-to-nude models strutting their stuff and shimmying, attempting to seduce the viewer with the power of the female body. The future house vibes mixed with the provocative lyrics make this track a fun and quite risque venture into the often “been-their-done-that” world of music videos. Check out the alluring originality of the video now!

Digital Farm Animals – True
My personal favorite and with by far the strongest story of all of the videos this week, Digital Farm Animals bring us this heartbreaking tale with their latest video for the track entitled, “True”. The video follows a coupe of pig-masked bank robbers, the pig image being a staple in DFA music videos, and their mission to bring money to the oppressed. However, the law enforcement, consisting of the lead officer, Wolf, is attempting to stop them. In the fashion of Bonnie and Clyde, these two martyrs rob multiple banks with heavy artillery, while caring for each other as though they were one in the same. They give to the old, to the poor, and to those in need, but the cops have no choice but to shut them down. The story is painstakingly brilliant as it comes to a tragic close where we find our main characters face to face with their longtime foe, Wolf. Break out the tissues for this tale of love, loss, violence, and making things right.
