Felix Cartal is a Canadian electronic producer who creates melodic, energetic tracks aimed squarely at the dancefloor, but he also has a sentimental side, as evidenced by many melodramatic songs he’s recorded with female vocalists. Cartal fuses his songwriting and production roots with his love for club culture, enlisting a wide range of guest vocalists and creating a singular take on indie dance music. Hailing from Vancouver, British Columbia, he initially established himself when Steve Aoki signed him to Dim Mak Records.
Cartal made his full-length album debut in 2010 with Popular Music. Meanwhile, he increasingly established himself as a DJ, touring the North American club and festival scenes, with performances at EDC, Ultra, and Tomorrowland, all while releasing freely downloadable mixes on the Internet. Cartal continued to release a stream of singles and EPs, until his second full-length album Different Faces appeared in 2012, which included the singles “Tonight,” featuring Maja Ivarsson of Swedish band The Sounds and “Don’t Turn Out the Lights,” featuring Polina — the latter earning him his first Juno nomination.
Various EP’s released over the next two years cemented Felix as an originator of the trend of dance music producers collaborating with unique vocalists as well as being a pioneer of a vocal chop sound that can be heard on his 2013 tracks Young Love and After Dark. However, never content to reproduce the same sound, Cartal unveiled a stylistic shift in 2016, best heard on his remixes of Selena Gomez, Kiiara, Wafia, Galantis, Dillon Francis, ALMA, and others, all of which topped the Hype Machine charts, garnered him over 40million+ streams and saw praise from Billboard, Paper Magazine and other outlets.
Recently, Cartal has collaborated with Kaskade on the single “Fakin It” and with R3hab on “Killing Time,” which continued to push his artistry into a new level. His latest release, an expertly crafted dance remake of the 1998 New Radicals hit “Get What You Give,” was certified gold in January 2018 and has been nominated for a Juno Award. His anticipated third album is set for release in 2018.
